Indian Navy Showcases Maritime Heritage at Book Fair 2026

RR Team, January 11, 2026January 11, 2026

The Indian Navy is highlighting India’s rich maritime heritage at the New Delhi World Book Fair 2026, reinforcing its commitment to preserving naval history and inspiring future generations. The nine-day cultural and literary event, organised by the National Book Trust (NBT) under the Ministry of Education, has brought together publishers, scholars, and institutions from across the country.

The prestigious fair was inaugurated by Union Minister for Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan. Among the prominent participants, the Indian Navy has drawn wide attention with its dedicated pavilion that blends scholarship, history, and visual storytelling.

Naval History Division Leads the Initiative

The Indian Navy’s participation is being spearheaded by its Naval History Division (NHD), the Navy’s premier research and archival institution. In collaboration with the National Book Trust, the NHD has established exclusive stalls that feature authoritative naval publications alongside intricately crafted scale ship models.

These exhibits offer visitors a comprehensive view of the evolution of the Indian Navy, its traditions, and its operational excellence. The initiative underlines the Navy’s belief that understanding maritime history is essential to appreciating India’s strategic and cultural journey.

Official Naval Histories and Rare Publications on Display

Located at the Navy Pavilion in Hall No. 5, the exhibition showcases seven volumes of the official history of the Indian Navy covering the period from 1945 to 2021. These volumes document the Navy’s transformation from a regional force into a modern, blue-water navy with a growing global presence.

In addition to official histories, the pavilion displays books detailing the histories of Indian naval ships, submarines, air squadrons, and key establishments. Publications on India’s broader maritime heritage further enrich the collection, making the pavilion a valuable learning space for students, researchers, and history enthusiasts.

Panel Discussions on Defining Naval Moments

As part of its academic outreach, the Naval History Division has organised a series of panel discussions focusing on key themes in India’s naval journey. On January 10, 2026, a panel discussion on the 1971 War was conducted, moderated by Commander Neeraj Vashisth.

The session featured Commander Vijai Prakash Kapil, VrC, NM (Retd), and renowned defence journalist Sandeep Unnithan. The discussion provided in-depth perspectives on the Indian Navy’s decisive role during the 1971 conflict, one of the most significant chapters in India’s military history.

Exploring Maritime Expeditions and Global Order

Continuing the intellectual engagement, another panel discussion titled “Naval Maritime Expeditions: Past and Present” is scheduled on January 11, 2026, at the Theme Pavilion in Hall No. 5. The session will be moderated by Commander Kalesh Mohanan, with contributions from Captain Prashant C. Menon and Commander Neeraj Vashisth.

A third major discussion, “Creating Rule-Based Order: The Role of Indian Navy,” is scheduled for January 14, 2026. Moderated by Associate Professor Abhimanyu Singh Arha, the panel will feature Lieutenant Commander Anupama Thapliyal and Lieutenant Jeevitesh Saharan, focusing on the Navy’s critical role in maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean Region.

Book Release and Youth Engagement

One of the highlights of the Indian Navy’s participation will be the release of a new book on the Indian Navy, prepared by the Naval History Division. The publication is set to be unveiled by the Chief of the Naval Staff at a special event during the fair.

Beyond exhibitions and academic discussions, the Navy’s presence is also aimed at inspiring young visitors. Officers and representatives are actively engaging with students, encouraging boys and girls to consider a career in the Indian Navy and to understand the values of discipline, service, and national pride.

Inviting Citizens to Explore India’s Maritime Heritage

The Indian Navy’s stalls and publications have already attracted significant public interest, reflecting the growing curiosity about India’s maritime past and strategic future. Through this initiative, the Navy seeks to connect with citizens beyond uniforms and operations, showcasing the intellectual and cultural foundations of sea power.

The Indian Navy has invited all visitors to the New Delhi World Book Fair 2026 to explore its pavilion and gain deeper insights into India’s enduring maritime heritage and proud naval service.
