Indian Railways successfully managed the massive passenger movement during the Mauni Amavasya festival, operating 244 special trains across the country since 3 January 2026. Over 4.5 lakh passengers benefited from these dedicated services, ensuring safe, convenient, and uninterrupted travel during the festive period.

Peak Travel in Prayagraj Handled Efficiently

The city of Prayagraj, a major pilgrimage hub, witnessed peak travel on 18 January, with 40 special trains in operation. Northern Railway ran 11 trains, North Central Railway operated 22 trains, and North Eastern Railway managed 7 trains, carrying approximately 1 lakh passengers on a single day. Remarkably, all regular train services continued as scheduled, reflecting the railways’ careful planning and operational efficiency.

Coordinated Efforts Across Railway Zones

The special trains were operated across multiple zones, including 31 trains by Northern Railway (NR), 158 by North Central Railway (NCR), and 55 by North Eastern Railway (NER). Advanced planning, technology deployment, and coordination between zones ensured smooth operations, minimizing delays and passenger inconvenience.

Indian Railways leveraged resource management, digital monitoring, and on-ground coordination to ensure the safe and timely movement of devotees during the festival period.

Commitment to Passenger Convenience and Safety

The successful operation of special trains demonstrates Indian Railways’ dedication to passenger convenience and safety. Travelers experienced hassle-free boarding, timely departures, and uninterrupted services while adhering to crowd management and safety protocols.

By combining technology, logistical planning, and multi-zone coordination, the railways effectively handled one of the largest annual pilgrim movements, reflecting its commitment to operational excellence during peak festive periods.

Future Measures for Festive Travel

Indian Railways continues to enhance its preparedness for large-scale travel events, incorporating lessons from Mauni Amavasya. Emphasis on real-time monitoring, digital ticketing, crowd management, and special train deployment ensures improved passenger experience in future festivals.
