India’s Telecom Growth Story Sees Steady Momentum in April 2025

RR Team, May 29, 2025May 29, 2025

India’s telecom sector continued to serve as a vital link for millions across the country in April 2025, witnessing a modest yet consistent growth in its subscriber base. As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the total number of telephone subscribers rose to 1,203.84 million from 1,200.80 million in March, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 0.25%. This steady rise underscores the sector’s commitment to expanding connectivity, particularly in rural regions, despite ongoing infrastructural and logistical challenges.

The wireless segment, which includes mobile and 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), grew by 2.68 million subscribers, reaching a total of 1,166.43 million. The wireline segment, often seen as the backbone of enterprise and high-speed broadband services, also recorded a notable increase, with a net addition of 0.37 million subscribers and a growth rate of 1.00%. Together, these numbers reflect the resilience and adaptability of India’s telecom infrastructure in meeting the diverse needs of a digital-first population.

Rural areas, where digital connectivity is a key driver of socio-economic empowerment, continued to show positive signs. With a net addition of 1.96 million rural telephone subscribers, the rural tele-density rose from 59.06% to 59.26%. This improvement, though incremental, signals a critical shift in digital inclusion efforts, aiming to bridge the urban-rural divide. Urban areas, meanwhile, remained largely stable with a marginal increase in tele-density from 131.45% to 131.46%.

The broadband landscape, however, saw a slight decline, dropping from 944.12 million subscribers in March to 943.09 million in April, marking a marginal contraction of -0.11%. Most of this dip came from the mobile broadband segment, while fixed wired broadband showed a minor positive uptick. Still, with over 943 million broadband users across the country, digital services continue to penetrate deeply into Indian households, offices, and public spaces.

Among service providers, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd retained its lead with a subscriber base of 476.58 million in the broadband space, followed by Bharti Airtel at 289.31 million and Vodafone Idea with 125.63 million. Together, the top five providers accounted for over 98% of the broadband market share, reflecting the sector’s high level of consolidation.

The wireless (mobile) segment saw an addition of nearly 1.94 million users, bolstered by an increase in rural mobile subscriptions, which rose by 1.68 million. Encouragingly, 5G FWA services gained traction, growing from 6.77 million to 7.50 million subscribers, with 36.99% of users located in rural areas. This growth in next-gen connectivity brings hope for a more digitally inclusive future.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) continued to be actively used, with over 13.48 million subscribers opting to switch providers in April, highlighting the importance of consumer choice and service competitiveness.

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) cellular connections, an indicator of India’s growing adoption of IoT technologies, also saw significant expansion—rising to 69.87 million. Bharti Airtel led this segment with over 37 million connections, showcasing India’s progress in smart connectivity and automation.

India’s overall tele-density climbed modestly to 85.19%, with eight service areas still below the national average. While metro areas like Delhi lead with tele-density levels nearing 277%, states like Bihar lag behind, pointing to areas that require continued policy focus and infrastructure investment.

Despite data collection limitations from major players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel beyond November 2024, the overall trend speaks to the sector’s growth and commitment to expanding access. The month of April served as another chapter in India’s ongoing digital transformation, one built on small but impactful steps toward nationwide connectivity.

This snapshot of India’s telecom performance is not just a collection of figures—it is a reflection of the tireless efforts by service providers, regulators, and policymakers to ensure that communication, education, business, and healthcare reach every citizen, whether in urban skyscrapers or remote rural hamlets.
