Dispute Over Slogan and Alcohol Allegations
The incident unfolded when a passenger, identified as a lawyer, greeted crew members with the chant “Har Har Mahadev.” According to the cabin crew’s complaint, the man appeared inebriated, encouraged other passengers to join in the chant, and later attempted to consume alcohol on board.
The crew alleged that the passenger concealed a bottle of soft drink that smelled of alcohol and quickly gulped it down when questioned. He was handed over to security officials upon arrival in Kolkata.
Passenger’s Counter-Complaint
The lawyer, however, denied all allegations. He claimed he had consumed a beer at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport before boarding, for which he possessed a valid purchase receipt. He said he merely greeted the crew with “Har Har Mahadev” without any intent to offend or disturb.
In his counter-complaint, he accused IndiGo staff of harassment and denial of basic in-flight services, insisting he was wrongly portrayed as drunk and unruly.
IndiGo’s Response
An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed that the cabin crew reported the flyer as “unruly” and “under the influence of alcohol.” The airline stated that it is reviewing the flyer’s counter-allegations as part of its internal inquiry.
The flight, scheduled from Delhi to Kolkata, was already facing operational delays and remained stranded at the parking bay for three hours. The altercation added to the inconvenience of passengers.
Police Investigation Underway
Delhi Police confirmed that complaints have been filed from both sides and that the matter is under investigation. Officials have assured a fair inquiry to determine whether any airline rules or aviation safety protocols were violated.
This incident adds to a growing list of mid-air disputes reported across Indian airlines in recent months, raising concerns about passenger discipline and crew safety. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has previously emphasized strict compliance with aviation safety regulations regarding alcohol consumption and disruptive behavior on flights.
Rising Cases of Unruly Passengers
Aviation experts note that incidents of passengers clashing with crew have been increasing, often involving alcohol or cultural sensitivities. While airlines are required to follow due process before labeling a passenger “unruly,” such cases highlight the delicate balance between maintaining order and respecting individual rights.
Industry observers suggest that better awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of rules could help prevent such altercations in the future.
