INS Tarangini Arrives at Trincomalee on Training Visit

RR Team, March 1, 2026March 1, 2026
Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Tarangini has reached Trincomalee Harbour in Sri Lanka on a training visit, reinforcing the longstanding maritime partnership between the two neighbouring nations. The vessel arrived on February 27, 2026, and was warmly received by representatives of the Eastern Naval Area of the Sri Lanka Navy.
The visit comes shortly after INS Tarangini participated in the International Fleet Review 2026 held at Visakhapatnam. The ship’s presence in Sri Lanka highlights the Indian Navy’s continued engagement with regional maritime partners through training exchanges and goodwill visits.

High-Level Naval Engagements

During the port call, the Commanding Officer of INS Tarangini met Commodore Haritha Jayadewathe, Deputy Commander of the Eastern Naval Area. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in sail training and professional exchanges between the two navies.

Such interactions are part of ongoing efforts to enhance operational understanding and capacity building in the Indian Ocean Region. Sail training ships like Tarangini play a crucial role in shaping young officers and promoting maritime camaraderie.

Onboard Familiarisation and Community Outreach

As part of the visit, the ship opened its decks to Sri Lankan defence personnel, families, and trainee officers for a guided familiarisation tour. The initiative offered visitors an insight into the training environment, seamanship practices, and life onboard a sail training vessel.

Community engagement programmes and structured training exchanges are scheduled during the port stay. These activities aim to foster goodwill and deepen professional ties at multiple levels.

Joint Training at Sea

A key highlight of the visit will be the embarkation of selected trainee officers from the Sri Lankan Naval and Maritime Academy. The trainees will sail onboard INS Tarangini for a passage to Colombo, gaining firsthand exposure to various aspects of sail training.

The sea phase will introduce them to navigation, teamwork, leadership, and traditional seamanship skills. The collaborative experience is expected to strengthen interoperability and mutual trust between the two navies.

Symbol of Maritime Diplomacy

INS Tarangini serves as a floating ambassador of India’s maritime heritage. Built as a sail training ship, it is used to train Indian Navy cadets in discipline, resilience, and teamwork under challenging sea conditions.

The ship’s visit to Trincomalee underscores the strategic and cultural dimensions of India–Sri Lanka maritime relations. As two key nations in the Indian Ocean Region, both countries share common interests in ensuring safe sea lanes and regional stability.

Strengthening Regional Maritime Cooperation

India and Sri Lanka have consistently engaged in joint exercises, coordinated patrols, and training exchanges. Port calls by naval vessels serve as confidence-building measures and reinforce shared commitments to maritime security.

The arrival of INS Tarangini at Trincomalee not only highlights naval diplomacy but also underlines the emphasis both nations place on professional military education and cooperation.

As the ship continues its training deployment in the region, the visit stands as another step toward enhancing maritime understanding and strengthening ties in the Indian Ocean.
