The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised to unveil its player retention rules for the IPL 2025 season, with an announcement expected soon. Initially slated for late August, the release was postponed as the board navigated the complexities of a looming mega auction, which has prompted franchises to reassess their squad compositions. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah indicated that recommendations from franchise owners will be taken into account before finalizing the IPL player regulations.
In the previous mega auction held in 2022, franchises were allowed to retain up to four players each. As we approach the end of another three-year cycle, teams are eager to retain a greater number of players, with reports suggesting that the BCCI may permit as many as six retentions this year. However, there is a divide among teams; those with strong past performances are pushing for increased retention options to protect their investments in developing young talent, while underperforming teams advocate for a fresh start through a full auction.
In addition, the BCCI is likely to remove the Right to Match (RTM) option, which enabled teams to match the highest bid for players they previously owned. Veteran all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has criticized this mechanism, arguing that it undermines player value in the auction process.
