Justice Varma Impeachment Sparks Parliament Chaos

RR Team, July 21, 2025July 21, 2025

New Delhi, July 21, 2025 — The Monsoon Session of Parliament 2025 began with intense drama as Opposition parties pushed for debates on multiple burning issues, including Justice Yashwant Varma’s impeachment, the Pahalgam terror attack, and Operation Sindoor.

Impeachment Motion Against Justice Varma

On Day 1 of the session, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who is also the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, announced that he had received an official letter seeking the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma.

The letter was supported by 63 Rajya Sabha MPs and 145 Lok Sabha members, cutting across party lines. The motion, filed under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution, followed serious allegations including the discovery of burnt currency notes worth lakhs at the judge’s official residence on March 15.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The conduct of judges must maintain the dignity and independence of the judiciary. That is the foundation of a strong democracy.”

House Adjournments Amid Slogans

Despite Parliament reconvening post-lunch at 2 PM, disruptions caused by loud sloganeering led to the adjournment of both Houses until tomorrow. The Lok Sabha was adjourned thrice during the day.

Speaker Om Birla urged the Opposition to respect parliamentary procedures, promising full debates post Question Hour. However, members from Congress, RJD, Shiv Sena (UBT), and others insisted on immediate discussions.

Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam Attack: Opposition Demands PM’s Presence

Opposition leaders pressed for a detailed debate on Operation Sindoor—a high-intensity military response following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said, “We demand accountability for intelligence lapses. Sketches of suspects don’t even match eyewitness descriptions. PM Modi must address the nation in the House.”

Congress MP KC Venugopal submitted an Adjournment Motion in the Lok Sabha, calling for urgent debate on national security, foreign policy implications, and Trump’s recent claims about brokering peace in Kashmir.

BJP’s Response: ‘Ready for Any Discussion’

In response, BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal reaffirmed the government’s openness to any debate. “We are ready to discuss Operation Sindoor, SIR in Bihar, or anything the Opposition raises,” he told reporters.

He also defended the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, calling Opposition’s resistance an attempt to “let illegal voters from Bangladesh and Myanmar stay on the rolls.”

Key Bills Introduced and Passed

  • Income Tax Bill 2025: Presented by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, referred to Select Committee.
  • Bills of Lading Bill 2025: Passed in Rajya Sabha, modernizing colonial-era shipping laws.

The Lading Bill aims to simplify shipping documentation and promote ease of doing business in maritime logistics.

PM Modi Hails Military Strength

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi addressed media ahead of the session. He called the Monsoon Session a “Vijay Utsav” and praised Operation Sindoor for “neutralising terrorist hideouts in just 22 minutes.”

He also claimed that global interest in Indian-made weapons has surged after the operation.

On the economic front, PM Modi highlighted that India’s inflation rate has dropped below 2%, while growth remains robust. “The red corridor has become the green growth zone,” he said, referring to the decline in Naxal activity.

What Lies Ahead

The Monsoon Session, which runs from July 21 to August 21 with 21 sittings, promises heated discussions. With impeachment proceedings, terror responses, and electoral integrity all on the agenda, political fireworks are expected in the coming days.

However, meaningful debate can only happen if both sides choose rules over rhetoric. The coming weeks will test not just India’s political maturity—but also the public’s trust in its institutions.
