Leaders Pay Tributes to Indira Gandhi in Parliament

RR Team, November 20, 2025November 20, 2025
The Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan witnessed a solemn gathering today as Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla led Members of Parliament in paying floral tributes to former Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary. Political leaders across party lines came together to honour the late leader’s legacy and contributions to the nation.

The tribute ceremony saw participation from several senior leaders, including Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Shri Rahul Gandhi. Former MPs and other dignitaries also marked their presence during the event.

Shri Om Birla offered floral tributes on behalf of the Lok Sabha, reflecting the continuous tradition of honouring former Prime Ministers in the Central Hall. The event underlined Indira Gandhi’s enduring influence on India’s political landscape and her imprint on transformative national policies.

Senior Officers of Parliament Also Pay Respects

Secretary General of the Lok Sabha Shri Utpal Kumar Singh and Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha Shri P.C. Mody also paid their respects at the portrait. Their presence highlighted the institutional homage extended by both Houses of Parliament to the former Prime Minister.

The event maintained its customary solemnity, with members recalling Indira Gandhi’s leadership during challenging phases of India’s political and economic history. While no formal speeches were delivered, the dignitaries observed a quiet moment of reflection as part of the tribute.

A Portrait Unveiled in 1987

The portrait of Smt. Indira Gandhi holds a special place in the Central Hall. It was unveiled on 19 November 1987 by the then President of India, Shri R. Venkataraman. Since then, it has remained a symbolic reminder of her leadership and a significant part of Parliamentary tradition.

Indira Gandhi’s Enduring Legacy

Indira Gandhi, India’s first and only woman Prime Minister, continues to be remembered for her decisive leadership, nationalization policies, Green Revolution support, and role in strengthening India’s global standing. Her tenure reshaped modern India, leaving a legacy that continues to influence political discourse.

Events such as today’s tribute reflect the continuing respect she commands across institutions and generations. The gathering of leaders from diverse political backgrounds further demonstrated the significance of her contributions.
