Legendary Folk Singer Sharda Sinha Passes Away at 72: Tributes Pour In from PM Modi, President Murmu, and CM Yogi Adityanath

RR Team, November 6, 2024November 6, 2024

The world of folk music lost a legendary voice as Sharda Sinha, beloved for her soulful Chhath songs, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 72. The Padma Bhushan awardee had been bravely battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, and was under treatment at AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi since her admission on October 27.

Sharda Sinha, a cultural icon in Bihar and across India, brought Bhojpuri and Maithili folk music to the national stage with her captivating voice and heartfelt lyrics. Her songs became synonymous with the spirit of Chhath Puja, a festival of great devotion in her native Bihar. For decades, her voice touched millions, making her a household name, especially during the Chhath festival season.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow at her passing, sharing a heartfelt message on social media. He wrote, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha ji. Her Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs have been very popular for the last several decades. The echo of her melodious songs associated with the great festival of faith, Chhath, will last forever. Her demise is an irreparable loss for the music world. My condolences are with her family and fans in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”

President Droupadi Murmu also paid tribute, calling her passing “extremely sad.” She recognized Sinha’s immense impact on Bihari folk music and noted that her songs, especially those for Chhath Puja, are loved worldwide. In 2018, Sharda Sinha was honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award, highlighting her invaluable contributions to India’s rich folk traditions.

Sharda Sinha’s passing marks the end of an era in folk music. Her legacy will live on, as her timeless songs continue to resonate with listeners, keeping alive the unique cultural heritage she so lovingly shared. Her voice, especially during Chhath Puja, will be dearly missed, but her music will remain an everlasting tribute to her talent and passion.
