The National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, is on course to becoming a global center celebrating India’s rich maritime legacy. Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel conducted a joint review of the project on December 28, 2024, marking significant progress under the Sagarmala Programme.
Preserving India’s Maritime History
The NMHC is a first-of-its-kind initiative designed to highlight India’s naval and cultural achievements from ancient civilizations to modern times. Lothal, an Indus Valley Civilization site dating back to 2400 BCE, is historically significant for its advanced dockyard, vibrant trade, and bead-making industries. The complex will feature interactive exhibits and cutting-edge technology to provide an immersive experience, blending education and entertainment to attract global visitors.
Site Visit and Project Milestones
The ministers visited key locations, including the Museum Block, Lothal Jetty Walkway, and INS Nishank, and engaged with workers to understand the progress and challenges of the project. Sarbananda Sonowal expressed satisfaction with the 65% completion of Phase 1A, emphasizing its adherence to timelines and world-class standards.
Socio-Economic and Educational Impact
The NMHC project is expected to create employment, enhance skill development, and empower Gujarat’s youth. Highlighting the socio-economic benefits, Sonowal stated, “This initiative is pivotal for boosting tourism, fostering maritime education, and strengthening India’s global maritime partnerships. It is a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership in advancing India’s development.”
