Lt Gen Virendra Vats Appointed NCC Director General

RR Team, October 2, 2025October 1, 2025
New Delhi – Lt Gen Virendra Vats took charge as the Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) on October 1, 2025, succeeding Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh. The appointment comes at a crucial time as NCC, the world’s largest uniformed youth organisation, expands its cadet strength to 20 lakh across 28 States and 8 Union Territories, while aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047.

CC’s Growing Influence

With its motto of Unity and Discipline, NCC is evolving to integrate digital skills, innovation, and global awareness alongside traditional training in patriotism and character building. Lt Gen Vats is expected to guide the organisation through this transformative phase, strengthening its role in shaping disciplined and responsible youth nationwide.

Distinguished Military Career

Commissioned into the 19 KUMAON Regiment on December 17, 1988, Lt Gen Virendra Vats brings 37 years of operational and leadership experience. He has served in demanding counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism environments across Arunachal Pradesh, the Kashmir Valley, and at Army Headquarters. Notably, he commanded an Infantry Brigade under the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Prior to his current appointment, he served as the Commandant of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, contributing significantly to military education and leadership development.

Academic and Leadership Credentials

An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Lt Gen Vats also attended the College of Defence Management, Secunderabad, and the National Defence College, New Delhi. His extensive training and operational expertise equip him to lead NCC in nurturing future-ready youth with strong ethical and civic values.

Vision for NCC

Lt Gen Vats aims to further integrate innovation and digital literacy into NCC training modules while maintaining the organisation’s core focus on patriotism, leadership, and national service. His leadership is expected to enhance NCC’s outreach, preparing cadets to become socially responsible citizens and potential leaders of tomorrow.
