Magh Mela 2026: 21 Lakh Devotees Take Holy Dip at Sangam

RR Team, January 4, 2026January 5, 2026
Prayagraj: Magh Mela 2026 began with a grand display of faith as over 21 lakh devotees took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam on Paush Purnima, the first bathing festival of the year. The auspicious day saw pilgrims from across Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states flocking to the Sangam, while security and river management measures ensured a safe and organized experience.

Massive Devotee Turnout

By 4 PM on January 3, approximately 21.5 lakh devotees had performed the sacred dip at the Sangam. Earlier in the day, the numbers rose progressively 6.5 lakh by 8 AM, 9 lakh by 10 AM, 12 lakh by noon, and 15.3 lakh by 12 PM, highlighting the continuous stream of pilgrims. The administration anticipates that around 25 lakh devotees will take the holy dip over the course of the day.

Enhanced Security Measures

Given the massive gathering, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and local police, along with paramilitary forces, were deployed for round-the-clock monitoring. Snipers were strategically positioned, and mobile patrol squads continuously monitored the area. Authorities also set up 17 temporary police stations and 42 outposts to maintain law and order, while 10,000 personnel were mobilized for crowd management and traffic regulation.

Railway & Transport Preparedness

North Central Railway CPRO Shashikant Tripathi confirmed that the rail administration was fully prepared for the influx of pilgrims. Mela special trains were in operation, with six trains running by 5 PM on the first day. A total of 31 special trains were already scheduled, and services were adjusted dynamically according to crowd patterns to prevent any inconvenience.

River Flow Management

The strong currents in the Ganga posed challenges at Akshay Vat Marg, where a temporary bridge was washed away. Quick intervention by the Public Works Department redirected the water flow safely, averting potential accidents. Despite the high flow, the administration ensured the safety of devotees and maintained uninterrupted bathing arrangements.

Notable Rituals & Incidents

Several religious leaders participated in the festivities. Kinnar Akhara Mahamandaleshwar Kalyani Nand Giri Maharaj led a holy dip at the Sangam, emphasizing the spiritual significance of Paush Purnima. Additionally, devotees performed 108 ritualistic dips as part of a special prayer organized by Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Mukti Nirman Trust from Mathura.

There were minor incidents, including a runaway horse near Sangam Noj that injured a mounted policeman, and two fake spiritual leaders arrested for circulating counterfeit notes. These cases were promptly addressed by the police.

Regional Participation

Devotees from nearby districts such as Hapur, Farukhabad, and other regions gathered in large numbers. At Brajghat in Hapur, approximately 25,000 pilgrims performed the holy dip, while local temple ceremonies continued alongside the main Sangam rituals. The early morning Brahma Muhurta baths and temple visits contributed to a spiritually immersive experience.

Administrative Oversight

The administration emphasized crowd control and hygiene, with ample changing rooms and emergency facilities available. Traffic plans were implemented to keep highways clear, while officials including the SP, ADM, and CO monitored the situation. CM Yogi Adityanath extended his greetings to all pilgrims and Kalpavasis on the occasion of Magh Mela 2026.
