Ministry of Culture Launches Initiative to Revive and Celebrate Kamba Ramayana in Tamil Nadu

RR Team, March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

In a significant effort to preserve and promote Tamil literary heritage, the Ministry of Culture, through the South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC), has launched an initiative to revive the oral tradition of Kamba Ramayana recitals. This comprehensive program will not only celebrate the epic’s literary brilliance but also ensure its transmission to future generations through performances, workshops, and scholarly discussions.

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, will inaugurate the initiative at the historic Sreerangam Temple in Trichy. The event will feature cultural troupes from across Tamil Nadu performing traditional recitals of the Kamba Ramayana, showcasing the rich oral traditions that have been an integral part of Tamil culture for centuries. Following the inauguration, performances will continue across key temples in the state, reinforcing the deep-rooted connection between the epic and Tamil spiritual traditions.

A major highlight of the initiative is the week-long Kamba Ramayana Festival at Kambar Medu, the birthplace of Kambar in Theraazhundur. This immersive event will bring together scholars, artists, and performers to engage in recitals, dance dramas, and symposiums exploring the epic’s cultural and literary significance. The initiative will also feature music performances, theatrical interpretations, and scholarly engagements, ensuring a holistic celebration of the Kamba Ramayana.

The decline of the oral tradition of Kamba Ramayana recitals has raised concerns about the fading connection between younger generations and this monumental work of Tamil literature. By integrating performance, education, and community engagement, the initiative seeks to rekindle interest and ensure that the epic continues to thrive. Plans for an annual festival and a dedicated museum at Kambar Medu further underscore the commitment to preserving this invaluable cultural heritage.

The South Zone Cultural Centre, under the Ministry of Culture, has long been committed to promoting regional traditions, and this initiative exemplifies its dedication to sustaining India’s diverse cultural landscape. By revitalizing the Kamba Ramayana’s legacy, the program not only honors the past but also paves the way for its continued relevance in contemporary Tamil society.
