Mumbai Braces for More Heavy Rains This Week

RR Team, June 24, 2025June 24, 2025

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city today following a night of intense downpour. Roads across several parts of Mumbai were submerged, leading to traffic chaos, especially in low-lying areas like Sion, Kurla, and Chembur.

Heavy Showers Trigger Alerts

According to the IMD forecast, Mumbai can expect another spell of heavy rain throughout June 25. The skies will remain overcast, and daytime temperatures are likely to hover around 31°C, dropping to 27°C by night.

June 26 and 27 will see moderate rainfall, with no weather alerts. Cloudy skies will continue, but the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease slightly. The situation may improve slightly from June 28 onwards.

Waterlogging and Disruption

Several videos on social media platforms, especially on X (formerly Twitter), showcased waterlogged roads, stranded buses, and delayed local trains. Commuters are being advised to check traffic updates before stepping out.

Forecast For This Week

  • June 25: Heavy rain; yellow alert in effect.
  • June 26: Moderate showers; cloudy skies.
  • June 27-29: Moderate rainfall with no weather warning.
  • June 30: Rain likely to continue; cloudy skies prevail.

Authorities urge Mumbaikars to stay alert, especially in flood-prone zones. The BMC is on standby and has deployed pumps in sensitive areas to prevent prolonged flooding.

Lakes See Water Level Rise

As a silver lining, the continuous rainfall has helped increase water reserves. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported that the city’s seven major lakes now contain 4.08 lakh million litres of water — around 28.2% of total capacity. This is a welcome development as Mumbai often faces water cuts during dry spells.

What Should Residents Do?

Here are a few steps for safe travel during the monsoon:

  • Avoid stepping out during peak rainfall hours.
  • Check Mumbai traffic police updates before travel.
  • Keep emergency contacts handy.
  • Avoid flood-prone areas like Hindmata, Milan Subway, and King’s Circle
