Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Strengthened with New MoUs in Delhi

RR Team, December 24, 2025December 25, 2025
New Delhi, December 24: The Department of Social Justice & Empowerment has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwantari Ashram and the University of Patanjali under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA). The agreements were formalized at Samrasta Hall, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, in the presence of Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar, senior officials, and representatives of the partnering institutions.

Spiritual Organisations Join Hands

The initiative marks a significant step in involving spiritual and religious organisations in the fight against substance abuse. With their influence across communities, these organisations are expected to play a pivotal role in spreading awareness and mobilizing people under the NMBA banner. The Minister emphasized that eradicating drug addiction requires collective action, urging society to unite in guiding youth back to a healthier path.

Boost to NMBA Implementation

Launched on August 15, 2020, NMBA initially targeted 272 vulnerable districts and has since expanded to all districts nationwide. The campaign focuses on schools, universities, and higher educational institutions to reach young people directly. With the latest MoUs, the Department believes the Abhiyaan will gain further momentum in achieving its vision of a drug-free India.

Achievements So Far

NMBA has already made remarkable progress. Over 25.7 crore people have been sensitized about substance use, including 9.2 crore youth and 6.3 crore women. More than 15.9 lakh educational institutions have participated, ensuring that awareness reaches children and students across the country. The campaign has also leveraged social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to amplify its message.

MoUs have now been signed with eight major spiritual organisations, including The Art of Living, Brahma Kumaris, Sant Nirankari Mission, ISKCON, Shri Ram Chandra Mission, All World Gayatri Pariwar, Sivananda Ashram, and University of Patanjali. These partnerships are expected to expand NMBA’s reach and impact.

Nationwide Celebrations

To mark its fifth anniversary, NMBA organized a special event on August 13, 2025, in collaboration with the Government of NCT of Delhi. Over 1,000 students participated physically, while lakhs joined virtually. Another grand celebration was held on November 18, 2025, at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, with more than 10,000 participants, including BSF personnel, self-help groups, NGOs, and youth clubs. Nationwide, over 6.3 crore people took part in events across 2,10,000 locations.

Digital Outreach

The NMBA website (nmba.dosje.gov.in) offers detailed information, an online forum, dashboards, and an e-pledge facility. A mass pledge conducted on August 12, 2024, saw participation from over 3 crore people across 2 lakh institutions, reflecting the campaign’s growing influence.

Conclusion

The signing of MoUs with Sivananda Ashram and University of Patanjali reinforces NMBA’s strategy of engaging spiritual organisations to strengthen its grassroots impact. As the campaign enters its sixth year, the government’s vision of a drug-free India is being realized through collective action, awareness, and community participation.
