National Science Day 2026: Women Power Viksit Bharat

RR Team, February 27, 2026February 28, 2026

New Delhi, February 27, 2026: Marking National Science Day 2026, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh asserted that women scientists are not just participants but powerful catalysts in India’s march towards Viksit Bharat. Addressing the celebration at the INSA Auditorium in New Delhi, he emphasized that inclusive scientific growth is essential for nation-building.

Women at the Core of India’s Scientific Momentum

Speaking on the theme “Women in Science: Catalyzing Viksit Bharat,” Dr. Singh highlighted the growing representation of women in research, innovation and leadership roles. He underlined that India’s scientific transformation requires sustained institutional support and inclusive policies.

The Minister said that scientific growth and national development are inseparable. He stressed that talent must be nurtured across gender and geography to maintain India’s innovation momentum.

According to him, empowering young students particularly girls through structured exposure to laboratories and research institutions will create a multiplier effect in the coming years.

Major Initiatives Launched

Several significant initiatives were unveiled during the programme. These included the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster and the ANRF–Venture Centre Outreach Initiative, aimed at strengthening India’s research-to-market ecosystem.

The Mission Innovation India Report was released, along with a book titled Indigenous Architecture of Northeast India, highlighting the importance of blending traditional knowledge with modern scientific approaches.

A technology transfer agreement was also formalised for a DST-supported copper-doped nano titania coating developed for heritage conservation. The technology has been transferred to M/s Rebuild Technologies Services Pvt. Ltd., marking a key step in translating laboratory research into societal applications.

Science for Heritage Conservation

The copper-doped nano titania (Cu–TiO₂) coating represents a breakthrough in preserving India’s historic monuments. Developed using nano-titania and Cu-doped nano-titania embedded in a Paraloid B-72 matrix, the coating enhances hydrophobicity and UV resistance while maintaining aesthetic compatibility.

Officials said the formulation has demonstrated durability even after prolonged UV exposure, making it suitable for marble, sandstone and granite surfaces. This innovation strengthens India’s efforts to conserve its rich architectural heritage through advanced scientific methods.

‘Engage with Science’ Programme for Young Minds

Another highlight was the launch of the “Engage with Science” Programme by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication under the Department of Science and Technology.

The initiative will provide one-week residential exposure to students of Classes 8 and 9 across 16 autonomous DST institutions. It spans thematic areas including materials science, biological sciences, astronomy, medical technology, indigenous knowledge systems and earth sciences.

The programme aims to spark curiosity at an early age and align India’s demographic dividend with its scientific ambitions.

Strengthening Innovation Ecosystems

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, emphasized the need to build robust and inclusive research ecosystems. He noted that innovation clusters and outreach initiatives are designed to deepen industry-academia collaboration.

Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, stressed the importance of integrating biotechnology innovations with national development missions, particularly in healthcare and agriculture.

Dr. Singh reiterated that India’s scientific progress should be measured not merely by global rankings but by its ability to deliver solutions for citizens.

A Year-Round Scientific Resolve

Calling National Science Day more than a commemorative occasion, the Minister said it is a reaffirmation of India’s scientific resolve. He urged institutions to maintain momentum and ensure that mission-driven science continues throughout the year.

The initiatives launched reflect the government’s commitment to empowering women scientists, preserving cultural heritage through technology, and nurturing the next generation of researchers in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat.
