Netanyahu Faces Mass Walkout During UNGA Speech

RR Team, September 27, 2025September 27, 2025
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced a dramatic show of protest at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Friday, as diplomats from several countries staged a coordinated walkout during his address. The move left the iconic hall with rows of empty seats, underlining deepening global divisions over Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

A Speech to Empty Seats

As Netanyahu began his remarks, large groups of diplomats quietly exited the chamber. Videos of the near-empty hall quickly went viral on social media, symbolizing the growing isolation faced by Israel on the international stage. The walkout came amid widespread criticism of the Israeli government over the war in Gaza, which has drawn accusations of “genocide” from rights groups and global leaders.

Backdrop: Gaza Conflict and Rising Death Toll

The protest was triggered by Israel’s military operations in Gaza following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which killed around 1,200 Israelis and resulted in hundreds being taken hostage. In retaliation, Israel launched a full-scale offensive in Gaza. According to humanitarian agencies, more than 60,000 Palestinians have been killed since then, sparking international outrage and calls for accountability.

Peace negotiations have repeatedly collapsed, with the latest attempt earlier this month ending after Israeli forces reportedly struck targets in Qatar while talks were underway. The move further strained diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages.

Netanyahu’s Sharp Message

Netanyahu used his UNGA speech to remind the world of the October 7 attack, accusing many global leaders of ignoring Israel’s suffering. “Much of the world no longer remembers October 7. But we remember,” he said. He accused international leaders of “appeasing evil rather than supporting Israel” and claimed that some countries publicly condemn Israel while privately seeking its cooperation.

He sharply criticized nations that recently recognized a Palestinian state, arguing that such moves reward violence. “Murdering Jews pays off—that is the message they send,” Netanyahu declared. He insisted Israel would not accept the creation of a Palestinian state imposed through international pressure. “Israel will not allow you to shove a terror state down our throats,” he warned.

Global Reaction

The walkout highlighted growing impatience among world leaders with Israel’s handling of the war. Several European and Arab nations have pushed for stronger UN action, while countries like the United States continue to walk a diplomatic tightrope between supporting Israel’s security and addressing humanitarian concerns in Gaza. The visible protest at the UNGA was seen as a collective rebuke of Netanyahu’s hardline stance.

Indian observers note that the development could have far-reaching implications for global diplomacy. With Israel’s international standing increasingly questioned, pressure may mount on its allies, including the U.S., to reconsider unconditional support. and major global media outlets have underlined the shifting tone in international forums.

Symbolism Beyond Words

Analysts suggest that the empty seats at the UNGA may become one of the defining images of Netanyahu’s long political career. The act of walking out was not only a rejection of his speech but also a symbolic stand against the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. For critics, it underscored the urgency of a ceasefire and a renewed push for peace. For Netanyahu, it reinforced his narrative of Israel standing alone against a hostile world.
