NHAI Awards Contract for 111 Km Bhubaneswar Ring Road

RR Team, March 3, 2026March 3, 2026

Bhubaneswar: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued Letters of Award for the construction of the ambitious 111-kilometre Capital Region Ring Road project in Odisha, marking a major step toward decongesting the fast-growing urban cluster of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Khordha.

111 Km Access-Controlled Greenfield Corridor

The six-lane access-controlled Greenfield Capital Region Ring Road, also known as the Bhubaneswar Bypass, will stretch from Rameshwar to Tangi. The project is being developed in three packages under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) and is expected to be completed within 30 months from the commencement date.

Designed for a speed of 100 kmph, the corridor aims to significantly improve mobility across Odisha’s capital region. By diverting through traffic away from city centres, the project is expected to ease congestion and enhance road safety.

Package I: Rameshwar to Bilipada

The first 40-km stretch from Rameshwar to Bilipada has been awarded to Patel Infrastructure Limited. This section will feature paved shoulders and a 12.4-km-long service road on both sides.

The package includes two interchanges, one railway overbridge (ROB), 10 minor bridges, 142 culverts, seven elevated underpasses, and multiple vehicular and light vehicular underpasses. A wayside amenity facility will also be developed to serve commuters.

Package II: Bilipada to Gobindpur

The second package, covering 30 km from Bilipada to Gobindpur, has been awarded to VRC Constructions (India) Limited. This stretch will include 7.2 km-long service roads on either side.

Key infrastructure components include three interchanges, 11 minor bridges, 90 culverts, and several elevated and vehicular underpasses. A dedicated wayside amenity is also part of the development plan.

Package III: Gobindpur to Tangi

The third and final 40-km stretch from Gobindpur to Tangi near Bandola Toll Plaza has been awarded to HG Infra Engineering Limited. This section will incorporate 10 km-long service and slip roads on both sides.

The package includes one interchange, 23 minor bridges, 69 culverts, multiple underpasses, and a wayside amenity. Once completed, the entire ring road will form a seamless high-speed corridor around the capital region.

Boost to Economy and Logistics

The Capital Region Ring Road project is expected to provide a major boost to regional connectivity. By offering an access-controlled route, it will reduce travel time and fuel consumption while lowering logistics costs for industries operating in and around Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Officials believe the project will generate significant employment during construction and spur long-term economic growth. Improved connectivity is also expected to attract new investments and enhance trade movement within Odisha and neighbouring states.

Strategic Urban Decongestion Plan

With rapid urban expansion in Bhubaneswar and surrounding districts, traffic congestion has become a persistent challenge. The ring road is envisioned as a long-term solution to manage traffic inflow and outflow more efficiently.

By separating local and long-distance traffic, the project will promote safer and faster travel while reducing pollution levels within city limits. It also aligns with the Centre’s broader infrastructure push aimed at strengthening national highway connectivity across India.
