NHRC Steps In After Brutal Assault on Journalist in Odisha Sparks Human Rights Concern

RR Team, May 30, 2025May 30, 2025

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken a serious and compassionate step by initiating suo motu action in response to a disturbing media report about the brutal assault of a journalist in Odisha. The incident, which occurred on 25th May 2025 in Kulthipali village of Balangir district, involved the merciless beating of a TV journalist who was merely doing his duty—reporting on alleged corruption at a local construction site.

According to reports, the journalist was attacked without warning by a group of individuals. In a deeply distressing and inhumane act, his hands and legs were tied, he was dragged through the village, and then tied to a pole and savagely beaten. His mobile phones and camera equipment were reportedly destroyed, and he was threatened not to speak out about the incident or the suspected irregularities at the construction site.

In light of the grave nature of the incident, the NHRC has acknowledged that this case reflects a serious violation of the journalist’s human rights and professional dignity. Recognizing the need for urgent accountability, the Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Odisha, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

This act of violence against a journalist—whose role in society is to inform the public and hold power to account—is not only deeply troubling but also a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by media personnel in the line of duty. The Commission’s response reinforces the importance of press freedom, the protection of journalists, and the need for swift justice when these values are threatened.

Such incidents highlight the critical need for stronger safeguards and a more respectful environment for journalists across the country, especially those reporting from rural and remote areas. The NHRC’s intervention offers a glimmer of hope that justice will be served and that efforts to silence the truth will not go unanswered.
