NIA Jaipur Turns 50, Launches OPD, OT & Digital Outreach

RR Team, February 9, 2026February 9, 2026
The National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur, India’s premier institution for Ayurvedic education and healthcare, celebrated its Golden Jubilee on Monday, marking 50 years of sustained contribution to public health, education and research. The milestone event underscored India’s growing ambition to emerge as a global centre for holistic wellness rooted in evidence-based traditional medicine.
The commemorative programme was attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and MoS for Health and Family Welfare Shri Prataprao Jadhav, and Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for AYUSH Shri Prem Chand Bairwa, along with senior officials, academicians, students and researchers.

From Ayurveda College to Deemed University

Established in 1976 as an Ayurveda college, NIA has evolved into India’s first Ayurveda Deemed-to-be University. Over five decades, the institute has played a pivotal role in advancing Ayurvedic education, clinical practice, research, manuscriptology and patient care.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma described NIA as a “living bridge” between India’s ancient medical wisdom and modern scientific inquiry. He said the institute’s journey reflects dedication to public service and innovation within traditional healthcare systems.

Rajasthan’s Historical Link with Ayurveda

The Chief Minister highlighted Rajasthan’s rich heritage in Ayurveda, supported by medicinal biodiversity and traditional knowledge systems. He said the State Government is actively working to integrate Ayurveda, Yoga and other AYUSH disciplines into mainstream healthcare for wider public benefit.

Assuring continued state support, Shri Sharma said efforts would be made to strengthen infrastructure, academic excellence and future-ready growth at NIA, with the long-term goal of positioning it as a global centre for Ayurvedic education and research.

Centre’s Vision for Global AYUSH Leadership

Union AYUSH Minister Shri Prataprao Jadhav said NIA’s 50-year journey mirrors the dedication of generations of Ayurvedic scholars and physicians who preserved and advanced the science. He termed the institute a cornerstone of India’s holistic healthcare ecosystem.

Referring to initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Shri Jadhav said AYUSH systems have been firmly integrated into the national healthcare framework. He cited recent budgetary measures, including new All India Institutes of Ayurveda and the strengthening of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine at Jamnagar.

The Minister emphasised that India’s objective is to establish AYUSH as an evidence-based, scientifically validated and globally accepted healthcare system, with institutions like NIA playing a central role through advanced research and international collaboration.

Major Infrastructure and Digital Initiatives Launched

As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, several key infrastructure projects were inaugurated to strengthen education, research and patient care. These included the New OPD Block, named “Sushrut Bhavan”, aimed at expanding outpatient services and improving patient accessibility.

An Advanced Operation Theatre Block and a state-of-the-art Simulation Laboratory were also inaugurated, significantly enhancing clinical training standards, research capability and patient safety at the institute.

The Dhanwantari Upvan, a medicinal plant garden dedicated to conservation, education and research, was launched to promote awareness of India’s rich herbal heritage.

In a step towards digital outreach, the Union Minister recorded the first official podcast from the newly established NIA Podcast Studio, marking a new phase in academic communication and public engagement.

Commitment to Global Holistic Wellness

Deputy Chief Minister Shri Prem Chand Bairwa said the Golden Jubilee celebrations were a moment of pride for Rajasthan and the nation. He reiterated the state’s commitment to strengthening Ayurveda and traditional medicine as tools for public health promotion.

The event concluded with a collective resolve to transform NIA Jaipur into a global hub for Ayurvedic knowledge, digital health innovation and compassionate, evidence-based patient care, aligned with India’s “Heal in India” vision.
