Political Symbolism Behind the Meeting
The meeting comes just three days after Kumar assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a rally in Purnea that his party, the Janata Dal (United), was firmly committed to the NDA. He admitted that his earlier alliance with the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal was a mistake, attributing it to advice from within his own party.
Observers note that Kumar’s move could silence rumors that he had deliberately avoided BJP president J.P. Nadda during his recent Patna visit. By meeting Shah, widely regarded as the BJP’s key strategist, Kumar sent a strong message of cooperation within the alliance.
Electoral Context in Bihar
Bihar is heading toward assembly elections, likely to be announced in the coming weeks. Nitish Kumar, already the state’s longest-serving Chief Minister, is aiming for a record fifth consecutive term. The BJP and JD(U), partners in the NDA, face the challenge of countering the RJD-Congress opposition bloc, which has been trying to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiments.
The meeting also holds importance as it was Shah’s first visit to Bihar after the BJP reviewed its electoral performance. In the 2020 assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the NDA underperformed in several key regions, raising concerns within the alliance.
Amit Shah’s Bihar Tour
Following his meeting with Kumar, Amit Shah traveled to Dehri-on-Sone to hold discussions with party workers and leaders from ten districts across the Magadh and Shahabad regions. These areas have been weak spots for the NDA, and Shah’s interactions focused on strengthening organizational strategy and candidate selection.
Shah’s itinerary also included a planned stop in Begusarai, the constituency of Union Minister Giriraj Singh. There, he was expected to engage with party functionaries from Munger and Patna divisions to streamline the BJP’s preparations.
NDA Unity or Tactical Gesture?
While both leaders have downplayed the significance of the meeting, political analysts believe the optics matter more than the words. For the NDA, projecting unity is crucial at a time when opposition parties are stepping up their campaigns. For Nitish Kumar, the gesture reinforces his loyalty to the alliance, helping him secure political backing for a possible fifth term.
The coming weeks will reveal whether this “courtesy call” was merely symbolic or a precursor to deeper political coordination. For now, the meeting has set the stage for a closely fought electoral battle in Bihar.
