Nitish or Shardul India’s Big Selection Dilemma Before Leeds

RR Team, June 16, 2025June 15, 2025

India’s Big Dilemma: Nitish Kumar Reddy or Shardul Thakur for Leeds Test?

As the Indian team wraps up its intra-squad match and prepares to head to Headingley, a key selection headache looms large: Who should play — Nitish Kumar Reddy or Shardul Thakur?

Nitish’s Batting Form Shines Again

Nitish Kumar Reddy has been India’s trusted all-rounder throughout the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He notably scored a match-saving century at the Melbourne Test and showed resilience again by completing another hundred after resuming from an overnight score on Day 3 of the practice match. His growing confidence with the bat offers the Indian middle order a cushion.

However, his bowling has not been as promising. In the recently concluded intra-squad match, Nitish managed just one wicket, raising concerns about his dual-role effectiveness, especially on England’s seaming pitches.

Shardul’s Case: The Man with a Golden Arm

Enter Shardul Thakur — a seasoned campaigner often referred to as India’s lucky charm. Though not part of the Border-Gavaskar squad, Shardul forced his way into contention with a brilliant domestic Ranji season for Mumbai. Known for his uncanny knack of breaking partnerships and swinging momentum, Shardul brings both experience and X-factor to the table.

He last featured in a Test match in December 2023 against South Africa in Centurion. With 11 Tests under his belt, he has taken 31 wickets and scored over 300 runs — a decent return for a bowling all-rounder.

Intra-Squad Match Takeaways

The three-day intra-squad fixture offered glimpses of form and fatigue. KL Rahul and Shubman Gill scored impressive fifties, helping India put up 469. Sarfaraz Khan, playing for India A, turned heads with a blazing 76-ball century, even as selectors Ajit Agarkar and VVS Laxman watched closely.

But the biggest talking point came from the management’s sudden decision to end the match midway on Day 3. With just over two days played, team strategy seems to have shifted towards recovery and focused practice ahead of the England series.

Bowling Woes and Options

India’s pace battery had mixed returns. Jasprit Bumrah went wicketless, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna claimed two wickets each. Nitish scalped one, but failed to create sustained pressure. This might be the opening Shardul needs.

What Works for Each Player?

Player Strengths Concerns
Nitish Kumar Reddy Recent Test experience, batting form, Melbourne ton Ineffective bowling
Shardul Thakur Wicket-taking ability, experience in England, solid Ranji season Lack of recent international exposure

With the first Test set to begin on June 20 at Headingley, the team will fly out on June 17. A final decision on the playing XI might only come on match day.

Final Word: A Good Problem to Have?

India’s selection headache is, in many ways, a reflection of its growing bench strength. While Nitish offers continuity and batting depth, Shardul provides a proven knack for breakthroughs — especially crucial in England where the ball talks.

Coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma now have a tough call to make.
