Noida Dowry Case: Accused Shows ‘No Remorse’ After Encounter

RR Team, August 24, 2025August 24, 2025
Greater Noida: The Greater Noida dowry murder case took a grim turn on Sunday after the main accused, Vipin Bhati, was shot in the leg during a police encounter while allegedly attempting to escape custody. From his hospital bed, Bhati brazenly declared he felt “no remorse” over the death of his wife Nikki, sparking outrage among the victim’s family and women’s rights groups.

Accused Denies Guilt

Speaking to reporters after being admitted to hospital, Bhati denied killing his wife. “I have no remorse. I haven’t killed her. She died on her own,” he said. When asked about repeated allegations of domestic violence, he dismissed them as marital disagreements, saying, “Husband and wife often have fights; it is very common.”

Police officials said Bhati tried to flee while being transported for questioning. He was shot in the leg and is under treatment, with security personnel deployed at the hospital. An FIR has already been lodged against him and his family members under sections related to dowry harassment and murder.

Family Alleges Brutal Dowry Torture

Nikki’s family has accused Bhati and his parents of subjecting her to persistent torture for dowry. Her father alleged that she was set ablaze inside her matrimonial home after being doused with kerosene. The family claimed the in-laws were demanding a car and other valuables as part of their dowry demands.

“Her mother-in-law poured kerosene while her husband set her on fire. They kept asking for dowry. I married my daughter as per tradition, but they were never satisfied,” her father said. He added that Nikki had earlier been brought back home due to abuse, but her in-laws persuaded the family to send her back with assurances of change — promises that were broken.

Nikki sustained over 70% burn injuries and succumbed to them at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi. The father called the accused a “butcher” who had destroyed his daughter’s life for greed.

Protests Outside Police Station

The tragedy has triggered protests in Greater Noida. On Monday, Nikki’s family and supporters staged a demonstration outside Kasna Police Station demanding strict action and fast-track trial. Protesters carried placards highlighting the dangers of dowry violence and called for systemic reforms to protect women.

Local women’s rights activists joined the protest, condemning the accused’s statements and urging the government to intensify campaigns against dowry-related crimes. They also demanded that the case be treated as a “test case” to ensure strong punishment and deterrence.

Police Investigation Underway

Police officials confirmed that investigations are underway and assured the family of a fair probe. Senior officers stated that forensic reports and witness statements will form crucial evidence in the trial. Authorities are also examining previous complaints made by the victim’s family to determine whether action was delayed.

The case once again highlights the widespread menace of dowry harassment despite the Dowry Prohibition Act being in force. Activists argue that weak enforcement and social pressures often push victims into silence until tragedies occur.

Calls for Awareness and Reform

The disturbing incident has reignited debate on the role of media and civil society in raising awareness about dowry violence. Legal experts say swift prosecution and stronger social campaigns are needed to curb such crimes. “This is not just a legal issue but a societal one,” said a women’s rights advocate during the protest. “We must break the silence around dowry harassment.”
