NZ Win 2nd ODI, Series Locked at 1‑1

RR Team, January 14, 2026January 15, 2026
New Zealand produced a stunning comeback to defeat India by seven wickets in the second ODI at Rajkot, leveling the three-match series 1-1. The victory was powered by Daryl Mitchell’s brilliant unbeaten 131 off 117 balls, supported by Will Young’s 87-run knock. Their 162-run partnership for the third wicket came in just 152 balls, steering New Zealand to a successful chase of 285 the highest ODI chase for the Kiwis in India.

KL Rahul Leads India’s Charge

Earlier, India posted a competitive total of 284/7 in 50 overs. KL Rahul anchored the innings with an unbeaten 112 off 92 balls, showcasing his experience in handling pressure. Rahul stitched vital partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja (73 runs in 88 balls) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (57 runs in 49 balls) to stabilize the innings after early wickets.

Despite Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill providing a solid start, India lost momentum in the middle overs as Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply. Mohammed Siraj and the tail tried to accelerate towards the end, with Rahul remaining calm under pressure.

New Zealand’s Record Chase

After early setbacks, New Zealand’s Mitchell and Young took charge, carefully maneuvering the innings and punishing loose deliveries. Mitchell’s eighth ODI century was a testament to his class and composure, while Young complemented with steady stroke play. New Zealand achieved their highest successful chase in India’s ODI history, surpassing the previous record of 283 against England at Ahmedabad in 2023.

The Black Caps’ strategy focused on rotating strike, punishing loose balls, and maintaining pressure on the Indian bowlers. Key moments included Mitchell’s audacious ramp shot over KL Rahul and a record-setting partnership that dismantled India’s mid-innings dominance.

Player Reactions

India captain Shubman Gill reflected on the match: “We couldn’t pick up wickets in the middle overs, and that made it tough. The ball was doing well initially, but after the wicket settled, we struggled. We could have been braver in taking chances.”

New Zealand’s Will Young praised the partnership: “It was hugely satisfying to have this win and partner with Daryl. We stayed honest, communicated well, and handled pressure efficiently. Playing in India is always special.”

Looking Ahead

With the series now tied 1-1, the third and final ODI promises a thrilling decider. Both teams will be eager to take an early advantage in Rajkot, with New Zealand looking to continue their historic run and India seeking redemption after losing their eight-match ODI winning streak against the Kiwis.
