Over 500 Nepali Students Forced to Leave KIIT University Amid Unrest

RR Team, February 17, 2025February 17, 2025

Bhubaneswar, February 17, 2025 – A wave of distress swept through the campus of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) as more than 500 Nepali students were abruptly asked to leave following tensions over the tragic death of a fellow student. The incident, which involved the alleged suicide of a third-year Nepali B.Tech student, led to widespread unrest, prompting the university to take the drastic step of closing its doors indefinitely for students from Nepal.

The deceased student was found in her hostel room on February 16, reportedly taking her own life following a strained personal relationship with another student. The news sparked anger and sorrow among her peers, many of whom gathered in protest, demanding justice and accountability. The agitation escalated, leading to concerns over campus security and compelling the university administration to take immediate action.

In a swift response, KIIT issued a notice declaring that all Nepali students must vacate the campus without delay. Many students were transported to Cuttack Railway Station, 30 km away, but a significant number found themselves stranded without proper arrangements or valid tickets for their journey home. Among them were young women left in a vulnerable situation, uncertain about their next steps.

Local authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway. Police have seized the deceased student’s mobile phone and laptop for forensic examination, assuring the student community that due process is being followed. A male student, reportedly linked to the case, has been taken into custody for questioning. Officials emphasized that all necessary protocols were observed in handling the case, aiming to address the concerns of the grieving student body.

Meanwhile, the university administration maintained that the decision to send Nepali students home was made in the interest of restoring order and ensuring their safety. However, for many students, this sudden action felt like an unjust punishment, particularly as final examinations were just weeks away.

The incident has left students and families in deep anguish, raising concerns about institutional responses to crises and the need for better support systems. At this critical moment, those struggling with distress are encouraged to seek help through available counseling services.
