Padma Shri Dr Padma Gurmet Honoured for Sowa-Rigpa Service

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, has congratulated Padma Shri awardee Dr Padma Gurmet, Director of the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa (NISR), Leh, recognising his outstanding contribution to India’s traditional systems of medicine. The honour, conferred as part of the Padma Awards 2026, acknowledges decades of dedicated service towards the preservation and promotion of the ancient Sowa-Rigpa healing tradition.

In his congratulatory message, Shri Jadhav described the Padma Shri as a moment of pride not only for the AYUSH fraternity but also for the nation. He said that Dr Gurmet’s work has played a pivotal role in bringing the centuries-old medical wisdom of Ladakh and the Himalayan region into the mainstream healthcare discourse of India.

Recognition of a Lifelong Commitment to Traditional Medicine

Highlighting Dr Gurmet’s professional journey, the Minister said the award reflects his lifelong commitment.to conserving indigenous medical knowledge while ensuring its relevance in modern times. Through research, documentation, and institutional development, Dr Gurmet has helped establish Sowa-Rigpa as a recognised system under the AYUSH framework.

Shri Jadhav noted that the Padma Shri honour is a testament to Dr Gurmet’s scholarly excellence and tireless efforts in integrating traditional medicine with contemporary public health needs. His leadership at the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa has significantly strengthened academic training, clinical practice, and research in the discipline.

Sowa-Rigpa and India’s Holistic Healthcare Vision

Sowa-Rigpa, often referred to as the traditional medicine of the Himalayan region, emphasises balance between body, mind, and environment. The Minister observed that Dr Gurmet’s work aligns closely with the Government of India’s vision of holistic and preventive healthcare, which forms a core pillar of the AYUSH mission.

By advocating ethical practice, scientific validation, and sustainable use of medicinal resources, Dr Gurmet has ensured that Sowa-Rigpa continues to thrive while maintaining its cultural and ecological roots. His efforts have also contributed to global awareness of India’s diverse traditional medical systems.

AYUSH Ministry’s Appreciation and National Pride

Shri Prataprao Jadhav said that the entire AYUSH community feels inspired by Dr Gurmet’s unwavering dedication to traditional knowledge systems. He emphasised that such recognitions encourage younger generations of practitioners and researchers to pursue careers rooted in India’s medical heritage.

The Minister further stated that the Padma Shri reinforces the importance of indigenous healthcare systems in addressing contemporary health challenges. He added that Dr Gurmet’s contribution will continue to guide policy, education, and research initiatives under the AYUSH ecosystem.

Strengthening India’s Medical Heritage

Over the years, Dr Gurmet has emerged as a leading voice for safeguarding traditional medical knowledge through institutional support and public engagement. His work has helped bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and evidence-based healthcare, making traditional medicine more accessible and credible.

The Padma Shri award, the Minister said, symbolises national recognition of such efforts that preserve India’s civilisational heritage while contributing meaningfully to public health and wellness.
