PM Modi Condoles Sir Mark Tully’s Death, Hails His India Connect

RR Team, January 25, 2026January 25, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the demise of veteran journalist and author Sir Mark Tully, describing him as a towering voice of journalism whose work reflected an extraordinary connection with India and its people. The Prime Minister said Sir Mark’s reporting and insights left a lasting imprint on public discourse and helped generations better understand India’s social and political fabric.

In a condolence message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister conveyed sympathies to Sir Mark Tully’s family, friends and admirers across the world, acknowledging the immense respect he commanded in journalistic and intellectual circles.

Prime Minister’s Tribute on Social Media

Expressing his grief, Prime Minister Modi wrote that Sir Mark Tully’s bond with India was vividly reflected in his work. He noted that the journalist’s long association with the country enabled him to report on India not merely as an observer, but as someone deeply engaged with its people and evolving democracy.

“Saddened by the passing of Sir Mark Tully, a towering voice of journalism. His connect with India and the people of our nation was reflected in his works. His reporting and insights have left an enduring mark on public discourse,” the Prime Minister said, extending condolences to the bereaved family and admirers.

A Journalist Closely Linked With India

Sir Mark Tully was widely regarded as one of the most influential foreign journalists to have reported on India in the post-Independence era. Over several decades, he developed a deep understanding of the country’s institutions, politics, social realities and cultural diversity.

Unlike conventional foreign correspondents, Sir Mark immersed himself in Indian life, often highlighting the voices of ordinary citizens and the complexities of rural and urban India. His reporting style was marked by clarity, empathy and an effort to present India beyond stereotypes.

Enduring Impact on Public Discourse

Through his journalism and writings, Sir Mark Tully contributed significantly to public debate on governance, democracy, faith and social change in India. His ability to contextualise events and explain India’s diversity to both domestic and international audiences earned him widespread respect.

Media professionals and scholars have often credited Sir Mark for bridging the gap between India and the Western world by offering nuanced perspectives rooted in lived experience rather than distant observation.

Legacy Beyond Newsrooms

Beyond daily reporting, Sir Mark Tully was also known for his books and public commentary, which explored India’s political evolution, religious traditions and social challenges. His works often reflected a balanced approach, acknowledging progress while critically examining shortcomings.

Many young journalists have cited Sir Mark as an inspiration for ethical reporting, field-based storytelling and commitment to understanding the societies they report on.

Condolences Pour In

The Prime Minister’s message echoed sentiments expressed by journalists, political leaders and readers who remembered Sir Mark Tully as a voice of credibility and integrity. Social media platforms witnessed tributes highlighting his role in shaping informed discussions on India for several decades.

His demise marks the end of an era in journalism, particularly at a time when media discourse is rapidly evolving in the digital age.

India’s Respect for Journalistic Contributions

The tribute from the Prime Minister underscores India’s recognition of journalists who contribute meaningfully to democratic dialogue and public understanding. Sir Mark Tully’s work remains relevant for those seeking insight into India’s democratic journey and social diversity.

A Lasting Presence in Indian Journalism

As India remembers Sir Mark Tully, his work continues to serve as a reference point for thoughtful journalism that values depth over speed and understanding over sensationalism. His connection with India stands as a reminder that journalism, at its best, builds bridges between cultures and communities.

The nation joins the global journalistic fraternity in mourning the loss of a reporter whose voice, perspective and commitment to truth will be remembered for years to come.
