PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

RR Team, January 17, 2026January 17, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday flagged off India’s first-ever Vande Bharat sleeper train, marking a major milestone in the country’s railway modernisation drive. The historic launch took place at Malda Town station in West Bengal, connecting Howrah with Guwahati via an overnight, fully air-conditioned service designed for long-distance travel.

The Prime Minister also virtually flagged off the return Guwahati–Howrah Vande Bharat sleeper train, underscoring the government’s focus on improving two-way connectivity between eastern India and the Northeast. The new service is expected to significantly enhance passenger comfort while reducing travel time on one of the region’s busiest rail corridors.

Faster, Comfortable and Modern Rail Travel

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the Vande Bharat sleeper train has been developed to meet the growing transportation needs of a modern and aspirational India. The train offers an “airline-like travel experience at economical fares,” combining speed, safety and comfort for overnight journeys.

Railway officials said the train’s advanced design and modern amenities aim to transform long-distance rail travel, particularly for passengers who rely on overnight services. Fully air-conditioned coaches, improved suspension systems and enhanced safety features are expected to make journeys smoother and more reliable.

Reduced Travel Time, Boost to Tourism

One of the most significant benefits of the new service is the reduction in travel time. The Vande Bharat sleeper train is set to cut the Howrah–Guwahati journey by approximately 2.5 hours, offering faster connectivity between West Bengal and Assam.

The PMO noted that the time savings would not only benefit business and regular travellers but also provide a major boost to religious travel and tourism. The route serves several important pilgrimage destinations and cultural centres across eastern India and the Northeast.

Fare Structure and Passenger Rules

The fare structure of the Vande Bharat sleeper train has been designed to cater to a wide range of passengers. Ticket prices reportedly start at around ₹960 and go up to approximately ₹13,300, depending on the class of travel and distance covered.

Notably, the sleeper service does not offer RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) or waitlist facilities, a move aimed at ensuring confirmed berths for all passengers and maintaining service quality. Railway authorities believe this will improve travel certainty and overall passenger experience.

Infrastructure Push in Eastern India

Following the flag-off ceremony, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to attend a public programme in Malda, where he will dedicate multiple rail and road projects to the nation. He will also lay the foundation stone for new infrastructure works worth around ₹3,250 crore.

These projects are aimed at strengthening connectivity within West Bengal and improving links with the Northeast, a region the government has identified as a key growth engine. Details of railway expansion and highway development initiatives are regularly updated on official platforms such as pib.gov.in.

Political and Developmental Context

The launch comes during the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to eastern India, during which he is travelling across poll-bound West Bengal and Assam. The visit blends high-profile infrastructure inaugurations with political outreach ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Analysts note that large-scale transport projects like the Vande Bharat sleeper train play a dual role by addressing genuine development needs while also reinforcing the government’s narrative of infrastructure-led growth.

With the introduction of the Vande Bharat sleeper train, Indian Railways takes another step towards redefining long-distance travel, signaling a future where speed, comfort and connectivity go hand in hand.
