PM Modi Greets Nagaland on Statehood Day, Hails Naga Culture

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended heartfelt greetings to the people of Nagaland on the occasion of their Statehood Day on 1 December 2025. In his message, the Prime Minister highlighted the rich cultural heritage and admirable values of the Naga community, noting their contributions across multiple fields and their enduring spirit of service, courage, and compassion.

The Statehood Day marks Nagaland’s formal creation as the 16th state of India on 1 December 1963. The annual commemoration is significant not only for its historical value but also for the unity and pride it evokes among the Naga people. The Prime Minister’s message this year reinforced the Union Government’s appreciation of the state’s cultural identity and developmental aspirations.

Posting on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi wrote: “Greetings to the people of Nagaland on the occasion of their Statehood Day. The glorious Naga culture, rooted in service, courage and compassion, is widely admired. The people of Nagaland have distinguished themselves across many fields. May the state keep moving ahead with prosperity and progress in the years ahead.”

Acknowledging Naga Culture and Identity

Nagaland is home to a rich tapestry of tribes, each carrying unique customs, languages, art forms, and traditions. The Prime Minister’s remark on the global admiration for Naga culture underscores its growing recognition beyond the northeast. From intricate handwoven crafts to world-famous festivals like the Hornbill Fest, the state’s cultural output continues to draw domestic and international attention.

For decades, the Naga people have also earned distinction through their service in the armed forces, contribution to government services, sports achievements, music, and academic excellence. Modi’s message served as a national acknowledgment of these contributions while encouraging the state to further strengthen its development trajectory.

Progress and Development in Focus

In recent years, Nagaland has witnessed expanding infrastructure projects, improved connectivity, and new economic possibilities in sectors such as tourism, agro-based industries, and handicrafts. Statehood Day, therefore, not only celebrates the past but also presents an opportunity to renew commitments toward growth and stability in the region.

The Prime Minister’s wishes for prosperity resonate with ongoing developmental initiatives aimed at enhancing livelihood opportunities, strengthening governance mechanisms, and boosting youth-driven entrepreneurship across the state.

On Statehood Day, several Union Ministers, public representatives, and community leaders also extended their greetings, commending the Naga community’s resilience and harmonious social fabric. Many noted that Nagaland’s contributions to the national identity continue to expand, reflecting a strong bond between the northeastern state and the rest of the country.

Statehood Day celebrations across various districts featured cultural performances, community gatherings, and official ceremonies honoring the state’s journey since 1963. Schools, government offices, and cultural organizations participated in events emphasizing unity and progress.

Nagaland’s formation as a state was the result of extensive negotiations, political dialogue, and recognition of the region’s distinct cultural and historical identity.
