PM Modi Highlights Global Reach of Pongal at Delhi Celebration

RR Team, January 14, 2026January 14, 2026
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the Pongal celebrations in New Delhi, describing the harvest festival as a global cultural celebration and reaffirming that Tamil culture is a shared heritage of the entire nation. Extending warm greetings in Tamil, the Prime Minister said Pongal is now celebrated with enthusiasm by Tamil communities and admirers of Tamil culture across the world.

Calling it a moment of personal joy, Shri Modi said it was his privilege to celebrate Pongal alongside people who cherish Tamil traditions. He noted that Pongal reflects gratitude towards farmers, the earth, and the Sun, while also teaching balance in nature, family, and society.

Pongal Celebrated Alongside Harvest Festivals Across India

The Prime Minister observed that Pongal coincides with other harvest festivals being celebrated across the country, including Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Magh Bihu. He extended heartfelt greetings to all Tamil brothers and sisters in India and abroad, while also conveying best wishes to citizens celebrating harvest festivals in different regions.

He said these festivals highlight India’s cultural diversity while reinforcing a shared respect for agriculture, nature, and community life.

Tamil Culture a Shared Heritage of the Nation

Shri Modi highlighted his recent engagements with Tamil culture, recalling visits to the historic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Tamil Nadu and his participation in the Kashi Tamil Sangamam in Varanasi. He said these experiences deepened his sense of India’s cultural unity.

Referring to the inauguration of the Pamban Bridge during his visit to Rameswaram, the Prime Minister said he once again witnessed the grandeur of Tamil history. He emphasised that Tamil culture belongs not just to Tamil Nadu but to the entire nation and humanity at large.

He added that festivals like Pongal strengthen the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat” by connecting people through shared traditions and values.

Farmers at the Core of Tamil and Indian Civilization

The Prime Minister noted that nearly all civilizations across the world celebrate festivals linked to agriculture. In Tamil culture, he said, farmers are regarded as the foundation of life.

Referring to the ancient Tamil text Thirukkural, Shri Modi pointed out that it contains detailed reflections on agriculture and the importance of farmers. He described farmers as vital partners in nation-building whose hard work continues to strengthen the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.

He reiterated the Union Government’s commitment to empowering farmers through sustained policy support and innovation.

Pongal’s Message: Respect Nature Through Action

Emphasising the environmental message of Pongal, the Prime Minister said the festival inspires people to make respect for nature a way of life rather than a mere expression. He stressed that preserving the earth is a shared responsibility.

Shri Modi highlighted the importance of maintaining soil health, conserving water, and using natural resources responsibly for future generations. He said national initiatives such as Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Amrit Sarovar embody this spirit.

Sustainable Agriculture and Role of Youth

The Prime Minister said the government is focused on making agriculture more sustainable and environmentally friendly. He underlined that sustainable farming practices, efficient water management under the ‘Per Drop, More Crop’ approach, natural farming, agritech, and value addition will be crucial in the years ahead.

He praised the role of youth in driving innovation in agriculture, recalling his recent participation in a natural farming conference in Tamil Nadu. Shri Modi said he was inspired by young people who had left conventional careers to work in the fields.

Urging young farmers to expand the movement for sustainable agriculture, he said India’s goal should be to ensure food security, economic prosperity, and environmental safety together.

An Ancient Civilization Guiding a Confident India

Describing Tamil culture as one of the world’s most ancient living civilizations, the Prime Minister said it connects centuries by learning from history and guiding the future. He noted that modern India is drawing strength from its cultural roots while embracing new possibilities.

Concluding his address, Shri Modi said Pongal reflects the faith that is propelling India forward a nation rooted in culture, respectful of its land, and confident about its future. He once again extended Pongal greetings in Tamil and expressed gratitude to all present.
