Historic Knesset Address
In his speech to the Knesset, PM Modi recalled the historical connections between India and Israel, referencing the Book of Esther and ancient trade links documented in the Talmud. He noted India’s cultural influence, including the growing popularity of yoga and Ayurveda in Israel, and encouraged young Israelis to explore India’s rich heritage and wellness traditions.
“It was an honour to address the Knesset and interact with distinguished members,” Modi said, emphasising the deep-rooted friendship between the nations and the goodwill shared by the people of India toward Israel.
Strengthening Tech and Innovation Partnerships
After the parliamentary engagement, PM Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared a car ride to a technology exhibition showcasing advancements in innovation and collaboration. Netanyahu posted a photo on social media in Hindi: “हम साथ आगे बढ़ रहे हैं-और तकनीक व नवाचार में भारत-इज़राइल साझेदारी को और मजबूत बना रहे हैं।” (We are moving forward together—and strengthening the India-Israel partnership in technology and innovation.)
The visit emphasised bilateral cooperation in defence technology, cyber security, and high-tech sectors, laying the groundwork for potential agreements on advanced missile systems and technology transfer, including the Iron Dome and Iron Beam projects.
Recognition of Solidarity
During the Knesset address, Netanyahu warmly praised PM Modi’s response to the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks, highlighting India’s unwavering moral support for Israel and its people. “You didn’t flinch or waver; you stood by Israel and the Jewish community. Thank you,” Netanyahu said, receiving strong applause from the assembly.
Significance of the Visit
PM Modi’s 2026 trip marks the second official visit to Israel by an Indian Prime Minister, following his historic 2017 visit. Analysts view this as a milestone in bilateral ties, reinforcing defence, technology, trade, and cultural exchanges. The visit also strengthens people-to-people connections, enhancing academic, technological, and tourism collaborations between India and Israel.
