PM Modi Calls for Global Cooperation, Rejects Expansionism in Guyana Speech
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged for universal cooperation and stressed that now is not the time for conflict. Speaking at a special session of the Guyana Parliament in Georgetown, he emphasized India’s commitment to assisting nations in need without selfish motives.
Whether it was Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal, Türkiye, or Syria, India has always stepped up to help those facing crises, without expecting anything in return, Modi said. He noted that India has consistently been a first responder to natural disasters, including earthquakes, and has never pursued expansionist goals.
We don’t believe in expansionism. Space and sea’ should be areas of global cooperation, not conflict, he added. The Prime Minister stressed that the world should focus on humanity rather than conflict, describing the current era as one that calls for unity, not division.
Earlier in the week, PM Modi was honored with Guyana’s highest award, The Order of Excellence, for his contributions to global peace and cooperation.
India has never been driven by selfish or expansionist aims. Humanity first guides our decisions, Modi said, reinforcing that India’s actions are based on the principle of ‘democracy first, humanity first.
Modi also highlighted the shared history of India and Guyana, noting that both nations have faced similar struggles for freedom and independence. In the last 200-250 years, both countries have experienced similar kinds of slavery and fought for freedom, he said, adding that both nations are now helping to strengthen democracy worldwide.
India and Guyana have shown that democracy is not just a system. It is in our DNA, vision, and behavior, Modi concluded, celebrating the deep ties between the two nations.
He also touched on India’s view of island nations, saying “We don’t see island nations as small countries; we see them as large ocean nations.
