PM Modi Pays Tribute to Bharat Ratna M.G. Ramachandran on Jayanti

RR Team, January 17, 2026January 17, 2026
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid heartfelt tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G. Ramachandran on his birth anniversary, remembering the legendary leader’s enduring contribution to Tamil Nadu and Indian public life.
Marking the Jayanti of Dr. M.G. Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR, the Prime Minister recalled his remarkable journey as a leader who combined social commitment with cultural pride. In messages shared on social media platform X, Shri Modi highlighted MGR’s pivotal role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s socio-economic progress and in taking Tamil culture to a global audience.

The Prime Minister described MGR as an exceptional personality whose vision continues to inspire generations, noting that his ideas on social justice, inclusive growth, and welfare-oriented governance remain deeply relevant even today.

PM Highlights MGR’s Development-Oriented Vision

In his message, the Prime Minister underlined that MGR’s contribution to Tamil Nadu’s development was outstanding and transformative. He credited the former Chief Minister with prioritising the welfare of the poor and marginalised through people-centric policies.

MGR’s tenure as Chief Minister was marked by initiatives that sought to improve access to education, nutrition, and healthcare, particularly for economically weaker sections. His approach to governance placed the common citizen at the centre of policy-making.

The Prime Minister said efforts would continue to realise MGR’s vision for society, indicating the lasting influence of the leader’s ideals on public life.

Champion of Tamil Culture and Identity

Beyond governance, Prime Minister Modi also drew attention to MGR’s role in popularising Tamil culture across India and abroad. As a celebrated film icon before entering politics, MGR used cinema as a powerful medium to communicate social values and cultural pride.

His films often portrayed themes of justice, compassion, and empowerment, resonating deeply with audiences and helping elevate Tamil cinema on the national stage.

The Prime Minister noted that MGR’s cultural legacy continues to inspire artists, leaders, and citizens alike.

Tamil Message Reflects Cultural Respect

In a separate post written in Tamil, Prime Minister Modi paid homage to MGR in his mother tongue, reflecting respect for linguistic and cultural diversity. The message reiterated MGR’s immense contribution to Tamil Nadu’s progress and his vision for a just society.

The use of Tamil in the tribute was widely appreciated, underlining the importance of regional languages in national discourse.

MGR’s Enduring Political Legacy

Dr. M.G. Ramachandran remains one of Tamil Nadu’s most influential leaders. Rising from a successful film career to become Chief Minister, he forged a unique bond with the masses through empathy-driven politics.

His leadership style and welfare initiatives continue to shape political narratives in the state. Several of his policies laid the foundation for future social welfare programmes.

Leaders across party lines have acknowledged MGR’s contribution to public service and governance.

Nation Remembers a Mass Leader

On the occasion of his Jayanti, tributes poured in from across the country, with political leaders, cultural figures, and citizens remembering MGR’s lasting impact on society.

The Prime Minister’s tribute highlighted how national leaders continue to draw inspiration from MGR’s ideals of service, dignity, and inclusive growth.
