PM Modi Pays Tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh

RR Team, August 1, 2025August 1, 2025

On 1 august, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh on his martyrdom day. Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister called him an “immortal son of Mother India.”

His message read:

This tribute reflects the deep reverence that Indians hold for Udham Singh’s fearless sacrifice.

Who Was Shaheed Udham Singh?

Udham Singh was a revolutionary freedom fighter, best known for avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. He assassinated Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in London in 1940. O’Dwyer had endorsed General Dyer’s brutal action in Amritsar, which left hundreds of Indians dead.

Udham Singh was hanged on July 31, 1940, in London’s Pentonville Prison. Today, his sacrifice symbolizes unshaken courage and undying patriotism.

Why Is His Martyrdom Important Today?

His legacy continues to inspire generations. At a time when India is moving towards its goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047, remembering heroes like Udham Singh brings focus back to our foundational values of justice, courage, and sacrifice.

The Prime Minister’s tribute comes as part of the government’s efforts to highlight contributions of unsung heroes through initiatives like Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Legacy Beyond Borders

Udham Singh’s story is not confined to India alone. His act of justice resonated globally. British newspapers of the time called him “India’s hero.” In 1974, his ashes were returned to India and received with full honors. His home in Sunam, Punjab has since become a national memorial.

His name is now etched alongside India’s greatest martyrs like Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad. Schools, roads, and institutions in Punjab and across India are named in his memory.

Udham Singh in Popular Culture

His life has inspired literature, plays, and films. The most notable among them is the 2021 film Sardar Udham, starring Vicky Kaushal. The film was praised for its realistic portrayal of the massacre and Udham’s mental strength. It reignited national discourse about colonial brutality and the need to remember history’s painful truths.

Government’s Focus on Freedom Fighters

Over the last decade, the Government of India has taken several steps to honor unsung heroes. Museums, digital archives, and school curriculums now include detailed sections on freedom fighters like Udham Singh.

The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative has seen over 100 freedom fighter memorials cleaned, restored, and opened to the public. In 2022, the Prime Minister had also inaugurated a national digital gallery to showcase revolutionaries like him.

Why Youth Must Remember Udham Singh

As India aims for global leadership, it is vital that the youth draw strength from the nation’s past. Udham Singh teaches us to stand tall against injustice and to value our freedom.

On his martyrdom day, schools and colleges across Punjab organized events, debates, and patriotic marches. These initiatives ensure that the memory of such brave sons of the soil continues to thrive in young minds.

PM Modi’s Continued Emphasis on National Heroes

This tribute is part of a larger pattern where the Prime Minister consistently honors India’s freedom fighters. In his Mann Ki Baat broadcasts, he often urges citizens to visit freedom fighter memorials and teach children about their stories.

Earlier this year, PM Modi also paid homage to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rani Lakshmi Bai, and Veer Savarkar. The government’s digital platforms now include extensive content on their biographies, speeches, and contributions.

Final Thoughts

Shaheed Udham Singh’s story is not just one of revenge but of justice, patriotism, and purpose. He never sought recognition; he only wanted India to be free. On this day, as the Prime Minister rightly put it, let us ensure his story remains an inspiration for all Indians.

May his legacy live on in every heartbeat of a free and proud nation.
