PM Modi Remembers Partition on Remembrance Day

RR Team, August 14, 2025August 14, 2025

India observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 14, a day dedicated to remembering the suffering and displacement caused by the 1947 partition. On this solemn occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the millions affected by the tragic events that reshaped the subcontinent.

“India observes #PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay, remembering the upheaval and pain endured by countless people during that tragic chapter of our history. It is also a day to honour their grit, their ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh,” PM Modi posted on X.

Honoring Resilience and Unity

The Prime Minister highlighted the resilience of those who lost everything yet went on to rebuild their lives. “Many of those affected went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones. This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together,” he added.

Independence Day follows the next day, on August 15, marking India’s freedom from British rule in 1947. Meanwhile, Pakistan observes its Independence Day on August 14, commemorating the creation of a separate nation for Muslims following the partition.

Political Reflections on Partition

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also acknowledged the day on X, linking the partition to the Congress party’s policies at the time. He stated, “#PartitionHorrorsRemembranceDay is a day to express condolences by remembering the pain of those who suffered due to the partition of the country and its tragedy. On this day, the Congress party divided the nation into pieces, hurting the pride of Mother India.”

Shah further emphasized the violence, exploitation, and mass displacement that marked the partition. “Millions of people endured displacement. I offer my heartfelt tribute to all those people. The country will never forget this history and pain of the partition,” he wrote.

Remembering History, Learning Lessons

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day serves as both a reflection and a lesson. It underscores the need for national unity and the importance of harmony among diverse communities. The remembrance encourages society to honor the struggles of those who rebuilt their lives and contributed to the nation’s growth.

Remembering the partition is essential for educating future generations about the cost of division and the value of coexistence. Social discussions, exhibitions, and awareness campaigns help keep the memories and lessons of 1947 alive.
