PM Modi Shares Article on India’s Textile Sector Growth

RR Team, January 20, 2026January 20, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday shared an article authored by Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh, highlighting the rapid transformation of India’s textile sector into a powerful engine of economic growth, employment generation and self-reliance. The Prime Minister’s endorsement underscores the sector’s expanding role in strengthening India’s manufacturing base under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The article, circulated through the Prime Minister’s Office on social media platform X, traces the journey of India’s textile industry from a traditional, legacy sector to a modern, people-centric and globally competitive industry. It places emphasis on policy-driven reforms and targeted government interventions that are creating fresh opportunities across the value chain.

Textile Sector as a Growth and Employment Engine

According to the article shared by the Prime Minister, India’s textile sector is no longer confined to its historical identity but is evolving into a robust contributor to national development. With its labour-intensive nature, the industry remains one of the largest employment generators, particularly for women and rural communities.

The sector’s growth is being powered by a combination of infrastructure creation, production incentives and market access reforms. These measures aim to enhance productivity, attract investments and strengthen India’s position in global textile and apparel supply chains.

PM MITRA Parks and Infrastructure Push

A key highlight of the article is the government’s flagship PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks scheme. These parks are designed to offer world-class infrastructure, plug-and-play facilities and an integrated ecosystem that brings together spinning, weaving, processing and garment manufacturing.

By reducing logistics costs and improving ease of doing business, PM MITRA Parks are expected to significantly boost large-scale manufacturing and generate lakhs of direct and indirect jobs. The initiative reflects a shift towards scale, efficiency and global competitiveness in textile production.

PLI Schemes Strengthen Manufacturing

The article also highlights the role of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes in encouraging domestic manufacturing of man-made fibres, technical textiles and high-value apparel. These schemes aim to move India up the value chain by promoting innovation, quality enhancement and export-oriented production.

By incentivising incremental production, the PLI framework is helping Indian manufacturers scale operations, adopt advanced technologies and compete with established global players.

Free Trade Agreements Open New Markets

Another major driver of growth identified in the article is India’s expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). These agreements are improving market access for Indian textile and apparel products in key global markets, reducing tariff barriers and enhancing export competitiveness.

The combined impact of FTAs and domestic reforms is expected to accelerate exports, attract foreign investment and integrate Indian producers more closely with global supply chains.

Vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Sharing the article, the Prime Minister’s Office reiterated that the transformation of the textile sector embodies the true spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The focus is on building domestic capabilities while remaining globally connected and competitive.

The sector’s evolution is also aligned with broader national priorities such as inclusive growth, skill development and sustainable manufacturing. With rising demand for eco-friendly and ethically produced textiles, India is positioning itself as a reliable and responsible sourcing destination.

Looking Ahead

Industry experts believe that sustained policy support, coupled with private sector participation, will be crucial in realising the full potential of India’s textile sector. As global supply chains diversify, India stands to benefit from its scale, skilled workforce and improving infrastructure.

With initiatives such as PM MITRA Parks, PLI schemes and new FTAs gaining momentum, the textile sector is poised to play a pivotal role in India’s journey towards becoming a global manufacturing hub.
