Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a significant two-day visit to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, April 22, at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This trip marks a historic moment, as it is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the city of Jeddah in four decades. The visit carries hopes of strengthening ties between the two nations, with the signing of at least six key agreements and discussions on issues close to the hearts of many Indians, including the Hajj pilgrimage.
As the Prime Minister departed for Jeddah, he expressed warmth and optimism, highlighting the deep-rooted and evolving partnership between India and Saudi Arabia. From defence and energy to trade, investment, and cultural connections, Mr. Modi emphasized that both countries share a commitment to regional peace, stability, and prosperity. He referred to the Crown Prince as “my brother,” signaling the personal rapport the two leaders enjoy and the mutual respect that underpins their diplomatic relationship.
This visit also serves as an opportunity to deepen people-to-people connections. However, challenges remain—due to delays by some travel operators, about 42,000 Indian pilgrims may not be able to perform the sacred journey this year. The Prime Minister is expected to raise this concern directly with the Crown Prince, underscoring the government’s sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual aspirations of its people.
During his stay, Mr. Modi and the Crown Prince will co-chair the second meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council, established during the Prime Minister’s 2019 visit to enhance bilateral cooperation. The agreements expected to be signed span across vital sectors such as space, energy, healthcare, science and technology, and cultural exchange, reflecting the breadth of the growing relationship.
There is also a symbolic aspect to this visit. Jeddah, historically a hub of Indo-Arab trade and the gateway for Indian pilgrims heading to Mecca, holds a special place in the shared history of the two nations.
