PM VIKAS Skill Training Launched in Kottayam

RR Team, July 17, 2025July 16, 2025
The Government of India continues to empower its minority communities through meaningful action. On July 17, 2025, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Shri George Kurian, will launch a landmark initiative in Kottayam under the PM VIKAS scheme.

This project focuses on skill development and women entrepreneurship. The launch will take place at Tapovan Hall, IIIT Kottayam.

What is the PM VIKAS Scheme?

Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS) is a government initiative led by the Ministry of Minority Affairs. It aims to uplift minority communities by providing them with the tools to succeed—skills, education, and entrepreneurial support.

The scheme consolidates previous government efforts into one integrated program for socio-economic development.

Empowering Through Education and Training

At its core, the Kottayam project will train 450 minority youth and women in future-ready skills. It’s not just education—it’s a pathway to independence and success.

  • 150 youth will receive training in Internet of Things (IoT)—a technology sector rapidly growing in global importance.
  • 300 women will undergo a focused leadership and entrepreneurship development program.

This targeted training prepares participants for jobs in top tech industries or to start their own enterprises.

Support Beyond Training

The project does more than teach. Each candidate will receive a stipend during their training. After completion, they will be connected with employment or self-employment opportunities through industry linkages.

This ensures the training translates into real, life-changing outcomes.

IIIT Kottayam as the Implementation Hub

Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Kottayam has been entrusted with delivering this training. Known for its excellence in tech education, IIIT brings innovation, infrastructure, and industry mentorship to the table.

The institute will also serve as an incubation center for participants looking to start their ventures.

Government and Academic Leadership Unite

The launch event will see participation from several distinguished personalities, including:

  • Dr. M. Radhakrishnan, Registrar, IIIT Kottayam
  • Prof. Dr. Prasad Krishna, Director, NIT Calicut & Director (Addl. Charge), IIIT Kottayam
  • Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Minority Affairs
  • Dr. Shajulin Benedict, Principal Investigator, AIC IIIT Kottayam Foundation

This collaborative model between the government and academia ensures that quality education and inclusive growth go hand in hand.

A Step Toward Inclusive Growth

The PM VIKAS initiative focuses on the six notified minority communities of India. These include Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, and Jains.

Through this program, the government aims to build a strong, skilled workforce that contributes to India’s growth story while preserving community heritage.

The Kottayam initiative is one of several being implemented across the country under PM VIKAS. Each project addresses local needs while advancing national goals.

Why This Project Matters

In a world driven by technology and innovation, communities left behind need more than encouragement—they need access. This program offers access, opportunity, and empowerment.

By focusing on IoT and entrepreneurship, the project bridges digital gaps and promotes self-reliance. It also places women at the heart of change, giving them the tools to lead.

Future Opportunities

The training doesn’t end with a certificate. It leads to:

  • Industry jobs in fast-growing sectors
  • Support to start sustainable businesses
  • Mentorship from IIIT and industry experts
  • Networking opportunities with policymakers and investors

This is not a one-time intervention, but part of a larger vision for long-term empowerment.

Final Words

India’s strength lies in its diversity. And when every community thrives, the nation prospers. The PM VIKAS scheme in Kottayam is a step in that direction.

Through skill training, entrepreneurship, and institutional support, it builds bridges to a better future. Tomorrow’s leaders are being trained today, and the world should take note.
