Bidhannagar Police filed an FIR on Wednesday against actor-turned-BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty, alleging that he delivered a provocative speech at a BJP event in North 24 Parganas last month. The complaint, according to police sources, stems from remarks Chakraborty made on October 27 at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Salt Lake. This FIR was registered at the Bidhannagar South police station.
The event, which also saw Union Home Minister Amit Shah in attendance, kicked off the BJP’s new membership drive in West Bengal. An investigation is underway, said a senior official from Bidhannagar Police.
Chakraborty was unavailable for comments, but BJP state president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar dismissed the FIR as an act of vendetta politics. Majumdar argued that Chakraborty’s speech contained nothing provocative, adding, These are just efforts to intimidate him by using the police as a tool.
At the event, Chakraborty, a recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award earlier this year, boldly declared, In 2026, the throne will be ours, and we will do everything to achieve the goal. His statement referenced the BJP’s ambition to take power in West Bengal in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. He also issued a subtle warning, referring to earlier statements by TMC MLA Humayun Kabir that targeted BJP workers during the Lok Sabha elections. Chakraborty urged his party’s booth-level workers to stay vigilant, warning against any attempts to discourage BJP supporters from participating in the upcoming elections.
This development has sparked debate in political circles, with the BJP alleging the FIR was an attempt to silence its leaders and supporters. As the 2026 elections approach, tensions between the ruling TMC and the BJP are only expected to heighten, setting the stage for a charged political atmosphere in West Bengal.
