Powai Studio Hostage: 17 Children Rescued, Accused Shot Dead

RR Team, October 31, 2025November 1, 2025
Mumbai, October 31, 2025: Mumbai Police successfully rescued 17 children and two adults from RA Studio in the Mahavir Classik building, Powai, after a tense standoff with a man identified as Rohit Arya. The accused was shot during the rescue operation and later died while undergoing treatment, police said.

How the incident unfolded

The Powai police control room received a distress call around early afternoon reporting that a man had locked several children inside a studio where auditions were being held. The children, aged between 10 and 12 years, had reportedly come from different parts of Maharashtra for an audition, according to police briefings and media reports.

Officers from the local station, Quick Response Team (QRT) units and the fire brigade reached the Mahavir Classik building.

Rescue operation and the firing

Police officials said negotiators attempted to communicate with the suspect while tactical teams worked on an entry plan. After hours of engagement, teams gained access to the studio by breaking through a grill and entering via a restroom area, as reported by onlookers and eyewitness accounts.

During the operation, the accused allegedly fired at the police and threatened to harm the children. Officers returned fire; the accused sustained a bullet injury to the chest and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. All children and other hostages were rescued and shifted to safety; medical checks were arranged at the scene.

Victims and safety measures

The rescued children were reported to be physically unharmed and were reunited with family members after medical examinations. Mumbai Police confirmed that trauma counselling teams were deployed and that the children would receive psychological support. Further details on the adults present at the studio have not been fully released pending formal statements.

Suspect’s background and possible motive

Local media and neighbours identified the accused as a 50-year-old man who had been connected to community initiatives and had reportedly organised auditions for a web series or project. Some reports have suggested the suspect felt aggrieved over unpaid dues and recognition, but authorities have not confirmed a motive. Investigations are underway and multiple agencies, including the Crime Branch, are involved.

Official statements and ongoing probe

Mumbai Police issued a brief statement confirming the rescue and the death of the accused. A detailed probe has been ordered; officials said they will review body-camera footage, CCTV clips from the building and statements from witnesses. The post-mortem of the accused was scheduled at JJ Hospital, Mumbai.

What authorities must clarify

Key questions remain about how the accused acquired equipment used to trap the studio, how auditions were being organised and whether regulatory gaps need addressing around child auditions and studio safety. Police say these angles are part of the ongoing investigation.

This incident has once again focused attention on child safety protocols at informal audition venues across metropolitan cities and the need for stricter checks by building management and local law enforcement.
