President Murmu Emphasizes Empathy in Journalism Amid AI Disruption

RR Team, March 19, 2025March 19, 2025

President Droupadi Murmu honored outstanding journalism today as she presented the 19th Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in New Delhi. Addressing the gathering, she emphasized the critical role of free and fair journalism in a democracy, noting that without well-informed citizens, democratic processes lose their essence. She highlighted the need for a thriving newsroom filled with ideas, backed by a strong research wing to ensure accuracy and credibility in news reporting.

The President reflected on the evolution of journalism, noting that traditional media once thrived on a model where quality reporting attracted readers, which in turn secured advertising revenue. However, with the emergence of hybrid funding models in recent years, she urged that the success of these models be judged by their impact on the quality of journalism. She pointed out the challenges in sustaining reader-supported journalism, but also stressed its importance in maintaining independence and trust.

Speaking on the growing influence of artificial intelligence in news production, she acknowledged that while AI is transforming various industries, including journalism, it cannot replace the empathy and human values that define true journalism. Machines can compile and edit reports, but they lack the emotional intelligence that helps journalists connect with stories and audiences. She asserted that journalism rooted in human understanding will always hold value, even in an AI-driven world.

The President also addressed the dangers of misinformation, deepfakes, and biased reporting, urging media organizations and society to work together in educating citizens about these risks. She expressed confidence that with proactive efforts and technological advancements, malicious content will eventually be eliminated, and objective reporting will regain its prominence. She called upon the younger generation to develop critical thinking skills to discern biases in news and analysis.

Her speech underscored the vital role of journalism in shaping an informed and responsible society. As AI continues to disrupt industries, she reminded journalists that their greatest strength lies in empathy, ethical reporting, and unwavering dedication to the truth—qualities that no machine can replicate.
