President Murmu Meets World Cup-Winning Indian Women’s Team

RR Team, November 7, 2025November 7, 2025
President Droupadi Murmu received members of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 winning Indian squad at Rashtrapati Bhavan and hailed them as role models for the nation.

President hails unity, resilience and historic win

In a cordial ceremony on Thursday, President Murmu congratulated each player for India’s historic triumph in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. She noted that the victory had sparked celebrations across the country and abroad and called the team “an example of India at its best.”

The President emphasised that the players come from diverse regions and backgrounds but united as one “Team  India.” She praised their hard work, playing skills and determination, and credited family support and devoted coaching staff for guiding the side to global success.

Role models for the next generation

“You have become role models; the younger generation, especially girls, will be inspired to move ahead in life,” President Murmu said, according to the official Press Information Bureau release. She expressed confidence that the team would continue to keep Indian cricket at the top through future performances.

The President also acknowledged the emotional journey players often face the highs and lows, sleepless nights, and the pressure of elite sport —and lauded their resolve in overcoming challenges during the tournament.

Gifts, trophies and national applause

During the visit, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur presented the President with a jersey signed by the squad and the World Cup trophy, gestures widely covered by the national media. The meeting followed a similar felicitation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring the widespread recognition of the team’s achievement. (See coverage by NDTV and other national outlets.)

State governments and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have since announced cash rewards and honors for the players and support staff moves that highlight the growing institutional support for women’s cricket in India.

What this win means for women’s sport in India

Beyond a trophy, the World Cup victory marks a turning point for women’s cricket in India. It bolsters grassroots interest, strengthens calls for better training infrastructure, and increases visibility for aspiring women athletes across smaller towns and cities.

Experts say such national-level recognition  from the President and Prime Minister  can accelerate sponsorships, expand domestic leagues, and encourage policy support for sports programmes focused on girls and young women.
