New Delhi, December 23: In a significant moment for India’s scientific community, President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday presented the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025 at a formal ceremony held at Gantantra Mandap, Rashtrapati Bhavan.
In the second edition of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, a total of 24 awards were conferred under four categories Vigyan Ratna, Vigyan Shri, Vigyan Yuva, and Vigyan Team. Each category reflects a distinct dimension of scientific achievement, ranging from lifetime contributions to path-breaking work by young researchers.
Four Categories Celebrating Scientific Excellence
The Vigyan Ratna award, the highest honour under the scheme, recognises scientists whose work has had a transformative and sustained impact on Indian science. The Vigyan Shri category honours distinguished researchers for their exceptional individual contributions in specific scientific fields.
The Vigyan Yuva award is aimed at encouraging young scientists who have demonstrated remarkable innovation and promise early in their careers. Meanwhile, the Vigyan Team award acknowledges collaborative research efforts that have delivered significant outcomes through teamwork and interdisciplinary approaches.
Together, these categories underline the government’s intent to celebrate not only individual brilliance but also collective scientific endeavour that drives national progress.
Strengthening India’s Scientific Ecosystem
Addressing the importance of such recognitions, the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar scheme seeks to motivate scientists and innovators to pursue excellence while addressing national and global challenges. From fundamental research to technology-led innovation, the awards cover a wide spectrum of scientific activity.
The initiative also aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming a global leader in science and technology. By honouring scientists working within the country, the awards highlight the depth of talent present in Indian institutions and laboratories.
Officials noted that recognising achievements at the highest level fosters a culture of innovation, inspires younger generations, and reinforces the role of science in nation-building.
National Recognition with Global Relevance
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar has been positioned as a contemporary and inclusive national honour, reflecting modern scientific priorities and interdisciplinary research. Unlike conventional awards, it places equal emphasis on research, application, and societal impact.
The award ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan symbolised the nation’s gratitude towards its scientific community, whose work contributes to economic growth, technological self-reliance, and solutions to complex challenges such as health, climate change, and sustainable development.
Encouraging Future Innovators
By institutionalising the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar, the government aims to build long-term momentum in scientific research and innovation. The focus on young scientists and teams is expected to encourage collaborative, forward-looking research aligned with national priorities.
As India advances in emerging technologies and knowledge-driven sectors, such recognitions play a vital role in shaping aspirations and reinforcing the value of scientific inquiry. The 2025 awards stand as a testament to the country’s commitment to nurturing talent and celebrating intellectual achievement.
