Promotion of Hindi Is a Collective Responsibility, Not Just Government’s Duty: Dr. Jitendra Singh

RR Team, April 28, 2025April 28, 2025

Dr. Jitendra Singh Calls for Collective Responsibility in Promoting Hindi in Government Work

In a strong appeal for shared responsibility, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasised that promoting Hindi in government is not solely the task of a few departments but a collective duty of society at large. Speaking at the “Hindi Salahkar Samiti” meeting organised by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr. Singh underlined the importance of active involvement from all stakeholders to sustain the progress made so far.

Reflecting on a decade of transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Dr. Singh noted that significant strides have been made in normalising the use of Hindi in official communication. “In the past, sending or receiving letters in Hindi was rare, and even recipients were hesitant to accept them. That mindset is changing,” he said.

He highlighted a positive cultural shift, particularly among younger generations, even in non-Hindi-speaking regions like South India. “The third generation is embracing Hindi naturally, which is a hopeful sign,” he remarked, noting that this shift is occurring despite historical or political resistance.

Drawing an international comparison, Dr. Singh praised countries like France and Germany for preserving their native languages without external pressures. He urged India to adopt a similar pride-driven approach, cautioning against reducing Hindi promotion to a mechanical translation exercise. “The essence and technical meaning must be retained—not just the words replaced,” he stated.

Addressing ongoing challenges, such as a shortage of qualified teachers and administrative barriers, Dr. Singh advocated for more dynamic engagement beyond formal meetings. He encouraged committee members to contribute through regular communication and practical initiatives. “True mainstreaming Hindi requires consistent, everyday commitment,” he added.

Concluding his address, Dr. Singh called for innovative strategies to strengthen the use of Hindi across institutions. He welcomed suggestions from participants, reiterating that their contributions are vital to shaping future policy direction
