Rescue teams at Pune bridge collapse site over Indrayani River

Pune Bridge Collapse: 30 Feared Drowned in Indrayani Tragedy

RR Team, June 15, 2025June 15, 2025

Major Bridge Collapse in Pune: What Happened?

On Sunday, June 15, 2025, a section of the Indrayani River bridge in Pune’s Maval region gave way, leading to a major tragedy. The bridge near Kund Mall, a well-known tourist spot, cracked and fell at around 3:40 PM.

Over 200 people had gathered there. Many were walking, taking photos, or resting on the bridge when the structure broke apart. Around 25 to 30 individuals fell into the river.

A damaged part of the bridge lies in the river after the collapse.

A Fun Outing Turns into a Nightmare

The day started with joy as families flocked to the scenic spot. Children, parents, and visitors stood on the bridge to enjoy the view. Suddenly, the middle part collapsed.

Several people fell onto rocks below and got badly hurt. The fast-flowing water swept many others away. Survivors said they heard a loud crack, followed by screams and chaos.

“We saw people falling into the river. Some tried to swim, but the current was strong,” shared a local vendor.

Swift Response by Rescue Teams

Rescue teams arrived within minutes. Divers, boats, and drones joined the search. The strong river current made it tough to locate victims, but teams kept going.

Officials from the Maharashtra Government promised strict action. Early checks showed signs of damage on the bridge before the accident. Locals say they had raised concerns, but no repairs happened.

Community in Shock and Anger

Relatives rushed to the site, hoping to find loved ones. Many expressed anger at the lack of upkeep. They questioned why such an old bridge stayed open to the public.

“This was waiting to happen. The bridge looked weak, yet no one fixed it,” said a grieving local.

CM Eknath Shinde offered condolences and assured justice. The state plans to give financial aid to the victims’ families.

Details So Far:

  • Location: Kund Mall Bridge, Maval, Pune

  • Time: 3:40 PM, June 15

  • People Present: 200+

  • Feared Drowned: 25–30

  • Injured: Several

  • Suspected Cause: Poor maintenance and structural failure

A Repeat of Past Mistakes?

This isn’t the first such disaster. In 2022, the Morbi bridge in Gujarat collapsed, killing over 130 people. Like that tragedy, the Pune accident raises the same questions. Why do authorities ignore warning signs? Why do safety audits fail?

Experts say bridges like these need checks every few years. But many local bodies lack funding or willpower to act. This tragedy shows that neglect can cost lives.

What Must Change Now

This tragic event calls for urgent action. Officials must check all old public bridges and close unsafe ones. Tourists should stay alert at crowded sites.

The Pune bridge collapse is a warning India cannot ignore again.
