Connecting the East and West of Pune
The two corridors will connect residential, commercial, and educational zones including Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. This expansion is part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which aims to build an East–West transit spine across Pune.
It aligns with the city’s long-term vision to reduce dependency on private transport, cut emissions, and decongest arterial roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road.
Multimodal Integration for Seamless Commute
Both corridors will integrate with other key metro lines at the District Court Interchange Station, enabling smooth transitions to:
-
Line 1: Nigdi–Katraj
-
Line 3: Hinjewadi–District Court
This interconnectivity enhances urban mobility, allowing residents and office-goers to switch lines easily and save commute time.
Boost to Ridership and Urban Planning
Once operational, these corridors are expected to significantly boost daily ridership:
-
2027: 0.96 lakh
-
2037: 2.01 lakh
-
2047: 2.87 lakh
-
2057: 3.49 lakh
These numbers underline the long-term viability and public transport shift potential of the metro network.
Integration with Intercity Travel
Strategically, Chandani Chowk and Wagholi stations will become hubs for intercity bus connectivity:
-
Chandani Chowk: Mumbai, Bengaluru
-
Wagholi: Ahilya Nagar, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar
This will ensure that passengers coming from other cities can seamlessly connect to Pune Metro, making public transit more accessible.
Maha-Metro to Lead Implementation
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will handle all construction, including:
-
Civil infrastructure
-
Electro-mechanical systems
-
Station development
Topographical surveys and design consultancies are already underway, ensuring the project hits the ground running.
Why This Project Matters
The Pune Metro Phase-2 expansion is more than just infrastructure. It is:
-
A climate-responsive solution
-
A catalyst for economic growth in fringe zones
-
A step towards sustainable and inclusive urban transport
It will also encourage real estate, retail, and employment growth in suburbs, making Pune smarter and better connected.
