Ratlam–Nagda Rail Expansion to Boost Connectivity, Cut Emissions, and Drive Economic Growth in Madhya Pradesh

RR Team, May 29, 2025May 29, 2025

In a significant step toward boosting connectivity, easing congestion, and strengthening India’s logistics network, Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approval of the much-awaited Third and Fourth Rail Line Project between Ratlam and Nagda. The ₹1,018 crore project, covering a 41.4 km stretch, is expected to dramatically ease pressure on existing tracks, reduce carbon emissions, and improve freight and passenger services across Madhya Pradesh and beyond.

Addressing the media at Rail Bhawan, the Minister explained that the project falls under the High-Density Network and will reduce line capacity utilization from a high of 116% to a more sustainable 65%. The four-laning of this critical section will enhance connectivity between key junctions — Nagda in the north, Vadodara in the south, Indore in the east, and Chittorgarh in the west — improving travel and trade across regional and national corridors. This initiative aims to not only improve connectivity but also open new opportunities for economic development across central India.

The improved infrastructure will facilitate the smooth movement of freight from Madhya Pradesh to West Coast ports such as Kandla, Mundra, Pipavav, Hazira, Dahej, JNPA, and the upcoming Vadhavan Port. It is poised to benefit major economic hubs and industrial corridors including Indore SEZ, MMLP Bhopal, MMPL Indore, and the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor, as well as key industries like the Nagda Thermal Power Plant and viscose and chemical manufacturers.

The Railways’ broader vision for sustainable development was evident in the project’s environmental and economic impact. In its first year alone, it is estimated to save around 38 crore kilograms of carbon dioxide—equivalent to planting 1.5 crore trees—and 7.5 crore liters of diesel. By the eleventh year, the CO₂ savings could be comparable to planting more than 16.5 crore trees. Furthermore, the project is expected to generate 28 lakh human-days of employment, offering a much-needed economic uplift for thousands of families.

In addition to the rail line expansion, Shri Vaishnaw shared updates on the redevelopment of 80 railway stations in Madhya Pradesh under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These stations will soon offer modern amenities, enhanced aesthetics, and better passenger experiences, representing a significant quality-of-life improvement for millions of rail users in the state. He noted that the pace of railway development in Madhya Pradesh has accelerated, with budgetary allocations increasing and cooperation from the state government ensuring timely execution of projects.

To meet the growing passenger demand, the Railway Minister also announced three new train services. These will include trains from Rewa to Pune, Jabalpur to Raipur, and Gwalior to Bengaluru. These routes, expected to become operational within two months, will relieve pressure on overcrowded trains and provide vital new options for passengers traveling long distances.

Looking ahead to the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028 in Ujjain, Shri Vaishnaw emphasized that preparations are already underway. With millions of devotees expected to attend, the Ministry of Railways is holding high-level meetings to ensure smooth and safe travel. Coordination with the Madhya Pradesh government has already begun, and the Railways is committed to supporting the successful hosting of this spiritually significant event.

Joining the announcement virtually, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav reaffirmed the state’s full support for these initiatives. Several elected representatives, including MPs and MLAs from the Ratlam and Nagda regions, also attended the event, reflecting a united effort to bring transformative changes to the state’s railway infrastructure.

The announcement was not just about tracks and trains — it was a statement of intent to bring prosperity, connectivity, and comfort to the people of Madhya Pradesh. With thoughtful planning, collaborative leadership, and a deep understanding of the needs of the people, the Indian Railways is laying the foundation for a stronger, greener, and more inclusive future.
