As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a three-day visit to the United States, security preparations have been significantly tightened in light of recent threats. Coordination between Indian and American security agencies has intensified over the past two weeks, particularly after two assassination attempts on former US President Donald Trump.
The US Secret Service has enhanced security at all venues where Modi will visit, particularly in Delaware and New York. The heightened security measures are also due to concerns about potential threats from pro-Khalistan groups in the US.
Modi will first arrive in Delaware on Saturday, where he is scheduled to meet US President Joe Biden. Following their meeting, both leaders will attend the Quad Summit, along with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, at Archmere Academy, Biden’s alma mater. The event will be closed to the public, with stringent security measures in place to protect the leaders.
In New York, where Modi is set to address the Indian diaspora on September 22 at the Nassau Coliseum, local police and the US Secret Service are working together to secure the event, which is expected to draw around 20,000 attendees. The venue previously hosted the T20 World Cup, providing experience in managing large crowds and ensuring security.
Additionally, tight security is expected for Modi’s participation in the UN Summit of the Future in New York on September 23, coinciding with the UN General Assembly session. The Prime Minister is scheduled to return to India on September 24.
