Strong Earthquake Tremors Shake Delhi-NCR at 9:04 AM

RR Team, July 10, 2025July 10, 2025

Strong Tremors Jolt Delhi NCR

Residents in Delhi and NCR woke up to an unexpected jolt today. At exactly 9:04 AM, tremors were felt across the region after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit Jhajjar, Haryana. The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km, according to the National Center for Seismology.

People rushed out of homes and office buildings as ceiling fans swayed and computer screens rattled. Social media buzzed with users calling it the “longest quake of their lives.”

What Caused the Earthquake?

Delhi is located in Seismic Zone IV, which means it’s highly vulnerable to earthquakes. The region lies close to major fault lines including:

  • Delhi-Haridwar Ridge
  • Sohna Fault
  • Delhi-Moradabad Fault
  • Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault

According to the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), these fault lines are part of a deeper structure called the Delhi-Hardwar Ridge. This ridge extends from the Aravalli mountains toward the Himalayas, running under the Ganga basin. It’s a known cause of historical seismic activity in the area.

Public Reaction and Safety Measures

In Noida, Gurugram, and parts of western Uttar Pradesh like Meerut and Shamli, the tremors were widely felt. Office buildings were briefly evacuated. Many professionals were seen standing in open areas, avoiding elevators and glass doors.

Within minutes, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) issued a safety advisory:

  • Do not panic. Stay calm.
  • Use stairs, not elevators, to exit buildings.
  • Drivers should pull over to a safe, open space.

Is Delhi Prepared for Bigger Quakes?

This isn’t the first time Delhi has felt a significant quake. According to historical data, the city has witnessed at least five earthquakes over 5.5 magnitude since 1720.

Experts say the shallow depth of today’s quake is why it felt so strong, even though the magnitude was moderate. If a higher magnitude earthquake were to hit, the impact could be far more dangerous, especially in unplanned colonies and high-rise areas.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and NDMA are working on urban safety drills, retrofitting old structures, and increasing public awareness. But more needs to be done to make Delhi truly earthquake-resilient.

What You Should Do During an Earthquake

Here are simple steps everyone should remember:

  • Drop, Cover, and Hold if indoors.
  • Stay away from windows and glass.
  • If outside, move to an open area away from buildings and trees.
  • Keep emergency kits with water, flashlight, and first aid.

Preparedness can save lives. In a densely populated city like Delhi, awareness is the first line of defense.

Earthquake Anxiety Is Real

Many people reported feeling anxious even after the tremors ended. According to mental health experts, such responses are normal. The unpredictability of earthquakes often causes stress and panic.

Experts recommend deep breathing, staying informed through official sources, and discussing your fears with friends and family. If anxiety persists, seek professional support.

Final Thoughts

Today’s earthquake was a wake-up call. While no major damage or injuries were reported, the event reminded us of Delhi’s seismic vulnerability.

Let’s stay alert, stay informed, and be prepared for future emergencies. Being earthquake-ready is not just a government responsibility—it’s ours too.
