The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday slammed the Uttarakhand government for its inadequate response to the escalating forest fire crisis in the state. Over the past six months, wildfires have ravaged more than 1,100 hectares of forest land, severely affecting biodiversity and air quality in nearby towns and cities.

The apex court expressed concern over critical vacancies in the state forest department and demanded immediate action from the authorities. It also directed the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand to appear before the court on May 17, demanding an explanation for the lack of preparedness.
Environmental experts have warned that delayed action and poor planning have exacerbated the crisis, which is now affecting both the ecological balance and public health in the region.
